College Application Consulting
I know how difficult the college application process can be, and, unfortunately, that getting into the best colleges in the country involves a lot of luck. Fortunately, I have the experience to help high school seniors craft the best application they can. When I was applying to colleges, I wasn't a valedictorian, researcher, or star athlete, but nonetheless I was accepted to Yale, Princeton, and Stanford, and waitlisted at Harvard and MIT.
SAT Preparation
There's a poorly-hid secret about standardized tests: they don't really measure academic potential. Instead, they measure an ability to answer certain kinds of contrived questions, and all it takes to foster that ability is the right kind of practice. I improved my own score on the SAT by over 100 points to place in the 99th percentile, and I can help my students do the same.
Academic Writing Tutoring
Writing well is simply writing efficiently. After assessing my student's grammar, I draw on classics like Strunk & White's The Elements of Style and William Zinsser's On Writing Well to help them tell efficient sentences from clumsy ones as we collaboratively edit their work. Then, following the Yale Writing Center’s paragraph guides, my students learn how well-written sentences fit together into a persuasive essay. Alternatively, I can work with students on their specific writing projects.
