About Matthew
I'm a higher education professional who is seeking some part time work supporting students as they write essays. Given that I work in higher education, I am primarily interested in either supporting college students or high school students who are in the process of applying to college. In particular, I have an intereest in helping students write college application essays. I am also able to provide support for a variety of high school writing materials and essays.
I also have a personal interest in geography and am qualified to tutor geography at all levels.
I love working with students, as exemplified by my career in higher education. I like helping people and enjoy seeing students succeed. While I enjoy working with college students directly, I feel that this is another way that I can contribute to the world at large.
Higher education is really my third career. I first worked in renewable energy and computer mapping but found over time that I was tired of working with computers and I wanted to work with people. I tried physical therapy (long story!) and got into PT school but it didn't work out. I met with a career counselor at my college and after doing some career inventories, they recommended I work as a career counselor! So that's how I got into education. The rest is history, and I am very happy with my new station.
I work in higher education as an Access Consultant at the University of Minnesota within their Disability Resources Center. I have a MA in Educational Leadership from the University of St Thomas. I have also worked in academic advising and career counseling. Going back further, I worked as a writing tutor at a local community college several years ago.

I ask the student regular or general questions just trying to get to know them as a person - for example where they are from, what they are up to these days, etc. I think it's really just about being authentic and genuine.
I am also a pretty direct communicator and like to get down to business. I'll ask the student what they want, what their goals are, etc. I like to see results and progress.
I'll work closely with the student to ensure we are meeting those goals and getting them to where they want to get to.
I have worked with college students. I am happy to work with high school students also.
I also have a personal and academic interest in geography and I am qualified and happy to tutor middle and high school students in geography. Please contact me if you would like more details about this.
That's a hard question and it really depends on what the student is looking for. They might be looking for someone with a gentle approach, or maybe a more communicative approach.
I would say with writing/essays, they should find someone who is a good writer. Ask for a writing sample, make sure they can write. Have your parent review the writing. Ask the person about their process and style. Ask them how they like to work with students.
But again it's subjective. If someone can't acknowledge that, they are not being totally honest!
I worked closely with a PhD student who was having a really hard time with a death in the family. This was leading to mental health impacts, and he was really butting heads with a professor for a lot of reasons. After going through a lot of meetings and talks I was eventually able to develop a close enough relationship whereby I could level with him. I asked him if we could meet, and then I told him that he might want to consider taking a break from school. I shared my story about failing out of PT school and how it eventually led me to the path I am in today. I said that I felt that he really wasn't happy and that he was basicaly driving himself crazy. He thought about it and later did that, and met with me to personally thank me for being honest and straight with him. I'm happy that this worked out this way, and he has since found a job where he is much happier.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should do their best to think about what they want out of the current situation. I'm talking about more mature students of course. But if we are talking about a HS student - they should think, what are my real goals? What do I want out of this interaction? Do I want a particular grade, a particular type of relationship, etc?
Teachers are ultimately there to help students, but if the student doesn't know what they want, it's harder for the teacher to help them. Simple as that.

I generally charge $40/hr but I may raise my rates over time. I am reasonably flexible and I am willing to charge lower rates if the family is not of a priviliged background. So I am therefore fine with negotiating under certain circumstances.
