About Sam
I have a Doctorate in English Literature and have taught and conducted guided learning in various settings for over 20 years in Toronto, Canada and in my current home in Silver Spring MD. As an academic professional I taught classes at the university level. This involved both mentoring and giving guidance to students and teaching assistants under my supervision. In my community service work I have supervised and mentored volunteers of all ages as well as serving as a Social Work supervisor for student interns who were doing front-line work in low-income case management. As a cooking instructor I have taught students of all ages.
It is important to me to build a personal relationship beyond just presenting material and working through learning strategies. Human connection is an essential part of all of our lives, and it is particularly significant in an educational setting. I am passionate about Literature and even more passionate about people and sharing my joy of learning with others.
I started as a Teaching Assistant while I was in Graduate school studying English Literature for my Masters and Doctorate degrees.
I have over 20 years in teaching and training in academic and community service settings as well as cooking instruction.

I like to spend some time getting to know my students, learning about their lives and their likes and dislikes, how they relate to the world at large and how they feel about the learning process. I keep things lively and appealing by building on their interests and incorporating strategies like using games and calling up current events and popular culture for relevance and perspective.
I have taught high school and university students as a tutor and academic professional. I have also taught and supervised Social Work student interns in food banks and other community service settings, and I have worked with students of all ages as a cooking instructor.

Sam is a wonderful person- extremely caring, diligent, helpful, knowledgeable and dependable. I have known him for over five years through very challenging times and circumstances. All the while, Sam has always followed through on requests and provided follow-up information and guidance without reminder. Sam is a thoughtful, optimistic and good natured person. His temperament is even keeled which makes him a wonderful friend and confidant and excellent instructor. In all his interactions, Sam is intuitive and controlled - he has a knack for anticipating behavior so he is seldom caught off-guard and always communicates with respect. For Sam, his relationships are a way of life, a part of his basic self, rather than just duty. His personal and professional interactions contain a deep sense of understanding, care and camaraderie.
