About Karen
I have decided recently to become a private tutor. I believe my services would stand out for many reasons. I have been in the education system for fourteen years. I have been a long-term and short-term substitute teacher, a paraprofessional in special education, tutor/reader for the center for the blind, and I have been a literacy librarian. I hold a bachelor's degree in English with some education and special education classes on my transcript. For the past seven years, I have worked full time at an alternative school that provides educational services for a psychiatric residential treatment facility. I am the on-staff substitute teacher. For the past three years, when I am not in a classroom, I have focused my energies on building a book collection for a library that solely focuses on literacy. This task was assigned to me by my boss. I have drafted our school library's collection development policy, mission statement, vision, goals, and philosophy. I also work one on one with students who struggle with reading.
I love working one on one with students! I love to see their face light up when they accomplish a task that has proven to be difficult for them. I am a very slow paced person and work very well with students who have learning disabilities or just need one on one assistance. I am an out of the box thinker and often approach reading and writing in different ways. If I have trouble unlocking the door to their mind I will do research, as well as reach out to my fellow educators for different ideas.
I was encouraged by my children's elementary school teachers to become a substitute teacher.
I have a BA in English with several education classes on my transcript that concentrate on reading strategies and writing. I also have several Special Education classes on my transcript, predominately focusing on mild to moderate behaviors.
I have worked with inclusion, isolation, nonverbal, blind, ADHD/ADD, and other mild cognitive developmental disabilities. I currently work in an alternative school that provides educational services to residents of a psychiatric facility.
Reading comprehension skill set is my strongest field. Reading comprehension is not limited to language arts. Reading skills include the ability to read maps, charts, instructions, and pictures by using context clues.
I am a firm believer in building a child's confidence first, which may mean starting with some lessons below their grade level and moving up at the students pace. Of course, there will be a lot of encouragement and positive feedback to help move the student along.
