About Karolyn

I'm going to change my style to fit the student's particular needs and personality. As I get to know my students better I try to incorporate things they like into their lessons to make their learing as relatable as possible. I want to see your student succeed and will everything thing in my power to make this as fun and stress free as possible!

Getting to know my students; everyone is so unique and I learn just as much from my students as they do from me. One of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is watching a student who has been struggling with something finally master it and I go from walking them step-by-step to watching them work the problem out on their own with no problem!

I was studying abroad on a group program and the professor from my college was accompanied by her son. I was the only one in my group with any experience with Japanese so my professor reached out to me asked if I would be willing to tutor her son and I agreed. I've aways was the student who would tutor my classmates so I was more than happy to have an opportunity to formally tutor.

I have worked as a Japanese language tutor before where I developed a personalized curriculumn for my student. Presented lessons, and developed learning games, and quizzes to check his learning progress. I also have a TEFL Certificate (Teaching English as a Second Language) and that required an 120 hour course that provided training in various areas such as lesson planning, presenting concepts, and grammer. Currently, I work part-time as a day camp instructor and I have been assisting students (grades k-5) with their E-learning. My school district has just gone back to in-person half-days and now I just assist them with their home work and provide tutoring as needed.

About the lesson

I start by evaluating where they are in the the subject(s) they are strugling with. This will consist of me reviewing previous homework the student has completed on his/her own. Depending on the student's goals, I'll then proceed to develope a plan and set milestone goals with the parents' input. From there we'll set up a tutoring schedule and I'll work one-on-one with the student and help them with their homework and teach more indepth particular concepts the student is struggling with.

Formally, I have mostly worked with Elementary school aged children. Informally, I have helped college students and I am comfortable helping all grade levels escpecially when it comes to reading and writing.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) What, specifically do I struggle with? Vague answers like "everything" make it harder to make a plan to help you. Review your past homework, look for consistencies in what is marked wrong.

2) How long am I willing to work with a tutor on this and how many times a week?

3) Do I want a tutor to help me with my homework assignments and/or teach me the concepts?

I charge per hour. My exact price is negotiable but I charge $25 - $30 per hour (the further I travel the more it costs). I'm willing to do a trial first lesson (max 2 hours) for $15 an hour in exchange for a review.
