About Sarah

Hi! I’m a junior in college at UTD earning my Bachelor of Arts in International Political Economy. I am a transfer student, and spent my first year of college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, United Kingdom. While there, I was also the Events Editor of the newspaper and am skilled in writing and editing. I frequently help edit college and graduate school admissions essays, and have edited a medical school essay which received 5 acceptances, including from Baylor.

Currently, I work part-time as a teaching assistant at Kumon, and have experience with students from ages 3 to to 18. I help out with college admissions, as well editing essays for college students applying to grad school.

My areas of expertise are:

French tutoring

English tutoring

Writing help, including college essays

History tutoring

Fine arts (piano, painting, drawing)

I have a deep-seated passion for the arts and global culture. Preservation of such skills is of the utmost importance in this era of technology and innovation, and helping others realize the value and power that the arts have to enrich their lives is something that gives me great joy. Reading, writing, music, history, international studies, etc are all vital not only to succeed in school, but also to get accepted into college—most colleges prefer well-rounded students who are well-acquainted with the arts in addition to their academic goals. Ivy Leagues colleges in particular, like to see this on your applications.

My first teaching experience was in high school when I volunteered as an after-school tutor for kids who were struggling. I also volunteered at a women’s shelter, where I held an art therapy session for kids.

I have been a teaching assistant at Kumon for a year. I work with kids of all ages, from toddlers to seniors in high school. I also help high schoolers with planning, writing, and editing college essays. I have helped a college junior with a medical school essay that received 5 acceptances!

I always like to start out by determining the level that the student is at, as well as their learning style so that I can adapt my teaching methods to suit them. Each student is different, so this is an important step. Afterwards, I will work with them to find a comfortable starting point where there is no learning gap to build up their confidence. Once they are confident, they are more likely to welcome new challenges and thus their progress will expand over time, as well as their confidence when they find that they are able to handle difficulty well.

All sorts! From all kinds of different backgrounds and ages. I have even worked over language barriers. I worked with a young student who only spoke Hindi to teach her basic English. I speak fluent French as well. I’ve had some difficult students in my time as a teaching students, but there is nothing that can’t be done with patience and understanding.

Just make sure that they won’t give you cookie-cutter material to work on, because what works for one student might not work for you. You don’t want to waste money on something that isn’t suited to your uniqueness. That isn’t what private tutors are for!

A young girl I was working with, barely in kindergarten, was facing increasing pressure from her parents to perform above her grade level in both math and reading. The parents were getting frustrated that she was showing no progress in reading, and the child was getting anxiety about disappointing her parents. I pinpointed the problem: the material her parents were giving her was way too difficult, so she had eventually given up trying. So, when I worked with her I scaled it down a little and gave her material that was doable, but still presented a small challenge. Her confidence grew, so she did not burn out and stop trying. Instead, over time she welcomed the challenge! She is now able to read at a 1st grade level while still in kindergarten.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what kind of learner you are. Are you auditory, visual, etc. Think about your strengths and weaknesses in each subject. When you write, are you excellent at sentence structure but struggle with vocabulary? Are you good at memorization, but struggle with theoretical concepts? The more you know about yourself, the more you will be able to relay to your teacher and the more they can cater to your needs.
