About Maximilian
Hi there! My name is Maximilian. I teach high school English, and I have been a tutor for nearly 10 years, focusing on helping students learn to write well. I got my start tutoring while attending college in Miami, where I was asked to help fellow students--both ESL and native speakers--improve their writing. Since then, I've tutored and taught Literature, Public Speaking and English.
As for my own education (for those who do their due diligence), I graduated from a local private school with a 4.53 GPA. I was a National Merit Scholar Finalist and scored a 2250 on the SAT. In college, I took nearly 150 credit hours in a variety of disciplines, but focused mainly on philosophy and English. I graduated summa cum laude in December of 2013 from Thomas Edison State University with a degree in English and a cumulative 3.94 GPA. Nowadays, I'm currently working on earning my Master's degree in Language and Literature with a concentration in Imaginative Literature from Signum University. So while I'm a teacher, I'm a student, too, and can still identify with many of the struggles of student life.
I'm easy to reach--feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
While I can (and do!) teach all aspects of English, my absolute favorite aspect of it to tutor is anything involving writing. Before I became a teacher, I worked as a proofreader and copy editor at a local ad agency ... basically I improved professional writers' writing for a living. Now, as a teacher, I love it when students come to me wanting to enter this or that essay contest. I can't take the credit when they win, but it is nice to watch a student's work grow and develop, with little more than a nudge from me here and there. Students who struggle with writing are also a joy to work with; one of the best parts about being a teacher is watching the light bulb go off when students realize that good writing is nothing more than their thoughts on paper, simply and clearly.
I admit I am a bit of a grammar freak. Nobody else I know would enjoy reading about the history of the comma or other such things. But I do. I love the English language and all its nuances, and I love showing others how amazing it can be and helping them use it to express themselves. My goal with tutoring is to help students learn to do just that.
I was actually assigned a job tutoring in college, fell in love with it, and entered education pretty much right after graduation.
I'm an active high school teacher, so I'm familiar with what teachers are looking for and I work with students every single day.

For short-term tutoring, I'll usually just jump right in. I listen to my students to see what they're needing help with, and then guide them towards where they need to go.
For longer-term students, I'll often have a brief meeting where we talk about what they're hoping to achieve and to see if we're a good fit.
All kinds! I've worked with adults going back to school to finally get that degree and I've worked with 8th graders looking towards the high school world.
Make sure you find a tutor who isn't going to do the work for you. It's sometimes difficult for educators to sit and watch a student wrestle with a problem, but the best tutors and teachers know how hold back and nudge here and there at just the right spots to help you actually learn. Every tutor's goal should be that their students someday no longer need them.
