About Nancy

I have worked many years in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in mother - child health. I am fluent in French and know some Spanish. I am a certified teacher of language and have taught English as a second language for several years.

I am older, wise, and patient.

I can work with you to improve in the areas you want in order to meet your personal goals.

I love to work with people to help them learn the language and how to get used to the U.S. culture. I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing people grow in competence and confidence. And I always learn as much as they do!

I have always been a teacher - all of my public health work was about teaching new ways of doing things to improve family health.

I am a certified French and English teacher. I spent many years in developing countries working in nutrition and public health. I know a lot about many cultures and am very comfortable discussing anything they want to about their lives here or in their home country.

I am fluent in an African language and in French and can do greetings in many languages where I have worked.

I have taught literacy, English as a Second Language and TOEFL.

I have a PH.D. in Adult Education and enjoy working with adult students. I know how to teach adults.

I have done hundreds of trainings and written curriculum for adult learners,

About the lesson

  • All Levels
  • English

All languages in which the lesson is available :

English

First I will find out what they want to learn and what they want to improve: speaking, reading, writing , improve my work, etc. I will try to learn what interests them: cooking, cars, etc. For children we will talk about things that interest them to make the conversation more engaging.

Then I will find out what level they are in English. Are they beginners, or have they already had some English learning? I may use a few written questions for them to answer to assess their level of reading and writing.

With children I may want to know what subjects they are following in school so I can strengthen their vocabulary and familiarity with  the subject. I would like to know if they are having trouble in certain areas in school and we can decide together how to help improve the situation.

Then I will begin to put together learning plans to meet those needs and at the students' level.

I like to start right away with speaking so that the student feels that they are off to a good start. I will probably combine speaking and some written work. If they are interested I can give them names of videos to watch at home and tips to improve their learning on their own time.

I have worked with adults from all over the world. The majority were not well educated and so the curriculum had to be experientially based.

I have also worked with advanced students who were already well educated (university level) in their own language, but who needed to improve their English to enrich their stay in the U.S.

Meet the teacher (in person or online during COVID) and talk with the teacher to see if you are comfortable with the teacher. Ask questions if you can and if you have concerns.

Try to think about what your most important goals are in learning English.

A woman who recently arrived in the U.S. needed to learn how to ride the bus to get to her English classes, the immigration services office and to the food bank. She spoke Portuguese, French and several African languages, but not a word of English.

I obtained the appropriate bus route brochures. I helped her learn to read them. And then we went together on the bus from her house to the main places she needed to go. I told her what to expect and what to say in English, how to pay etc. From then on she was very confident and went every place on her own.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How much English do I already know?

Have I studied English before? Where?

What is  my goal: to improve at my work? to talk to my children's teachers at school? to be able to go to the doctor's appointment? To drive a car? Just generally to speak or read or write English better?
