About Chriscinthia

In addition to being a freelance writer, I have worked with general education and special education students for more than ten years. My students have included those who have been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, Usher syndrome, CHARGE syndrome, and Tourette syndrome. I have also worked with children who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as children who exhibit extreme emotional and behavioral issues.

Many students have learned to read, write, and become proficient in math under my tutelage. For example, a seventh grader, who read on a second grade level, advanced to a fifth grade level in less than six months. Developing a positive relationship with students, consistency, and a willingness to hold students accountable, has been the key to academic success.

As a result of working at a Montessori school, a magnet school, and the American School for the Deaf, I bring five skills to the table to ensure high quality service and a satisfied customer: flexibility, collaboration, creativity, persuasion, and emotional intelligence. Please feel free to view my work experience below.

Academic success always begins with building a positive relationship with the student.  I ask questions like "What's your favorite color?", "What television shows do you like?", "What video games or board games do you like to play?", "Do you have any hobbies?", "Do you like sports?", "What's your favorite subject in school?", and "What's one of your favorite movies?", and "What types of books do you like to read?"

Asking questions upfront usually makes the student feel more comfortable and it shows that you are interested in them as a person.

I also clearly explain my expectations and ask the student and the parent if they have any questions.  Even special education students perform at the level of your expectation.

Finally, I ask the parent about current grade level with respect to reading and writing, what the student's strengths are, and what they want improved.

I always end on a positive note, celebrating where the student is right now and always encouraging them to improve on what they already know or have recently learned.  When a student feels successful, they will always try harder and give you more.
