About Clarice

I can help writers refine their writing process so that they feel confident and comfortable in their writing skills and will help with anything that involves writing or communication including but not limited to preparing for interviews, presentations, speeches, lab reports, creative writing, formal essays, emails, and job and career materials.

I am a fourth year English Major, Writing Minor student at Oregon State University where I have spent most of my time studying and specializing in analytical writing, and creative writing. I will be graduating in spring of 2019, and starting a master’s program for teaching in summer of 2019.

I have been working at Oregon State’s Undergrad research and Writing Studio since fall of 2017 where I have spent over 50 hours in trainings focusing in pedagogies, practicum, and English language learners (ELL). I help students with any part of the writing process from beginning to understand an assignment to grammar, and have helped with a variety of writing based assignments.

I also work at Oregon State’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) where I asynchronously help Oregon State students from across the world with their writing skills.

In November 2018 I attended the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) where I attended sessions that focused on avoiding racism and helping diverse students in academia and presented on Writing studio pedagogies and theories in practice as opposed to writing center pedagogies.

I also have experience and a deep understanding of how job hunting works and how to write curriculum vitaes, resumes, cover letters, and prepare for interviews. This knowledge translates easily into working on scholarship essays, personal statements, ect.

I absolutley love writing in all forms! I love helping others find confidence in their skills, as I have found that writing is often something that is harshly critisized by instructors and teachers leading to cause students to be stressed out by the thought of having to writing something.

If we can learn skills that will help us approach writing, and lean how our individual writing process works we can help ease the pain of writing on students. And I love helping students learn how to do this!

My wish would be for everyone to understand and appreciate the value of writing and the role it plays in communication. I know this is a lofty goal but I think that it is important for us to understand the connections between these two concepts, and in doing so we can go about writing and communicating in a fashion that will only serve to benefit us!

I began as a tutor for the Advacement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program where I learned how to guide students towards better understanding their geometry and algebra 1 homework.

I have also worked as a writing tutor briefly for Aloha High School's writing center, and as a personal assistant tutor at Eugene High School and as a tutor at Corvallis High School's tutoring center.

Most of my training comes from my work and dedication to writers at Oregon State's Undergrad Research and Writing Studio where I have learned how to help students improve their writing process. I love helping students and seeing the "ah-ha" moment on their faces when we make a breakthrough in their writing.

I am very excited to start my Master's of Arts in teaching program in the summer where I will refine and enhance my teaching and tutoring skills and learn how to best help individual students in their studies.

I have spent four years studying English Literature and creative writing ranging from British to American literature and realting themes to historical and cultural significance as well as analytical theories like Queer theories and Feminism. I have taken a vairety of creative writing classes learning how to write and edit fiction, realistic fiction, memior, and nonfiction.

About the lesson

It is dependant on what kind of project we are working with. I love getting to know the writers I work with and am happy to learn about your joys and hobbies in the process of working with you. This can also help me tailor a tutoring style to your specific individualed person!

I would like to get to know what the assignment/prompt is requesting of you and if there is a grading rubric assosiated with it, these are things I would like to take a look at in order to understand what we are doing.

From here I want to know about what it is you would like to do with this project and what your goals for it are so that I can help as best as possible.

If we are working with something that doesn't particularly have a prompt like a resume I would like to get to know you, your experiences (paid and unpaid), job goals and aspirations, education, ect.

Overall, the more information I have surrounding the expected outcome of this project the better I can assist you. And the better I know your personal and specific goals and wishes the more likely we can acheive that.

I have worked with English Language Learning (ELL) students, traditional students, non-traditional students, high school students, college students, students with varying levels of disability including but not limited to autism, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia.

I am very open to working with all writers.

I would reach out to and speak to the person you are looking to hire, find out about their interests and cares in the subject you are looking for a tutor in, do they align with your own? If you write to or speak to that person do you get along? You could ask about their experience or level of familiarity in the area you are looking at, for example, does the person write creativley very often? Do they do lab reports often?

Overall, trust your gut!

I had an amazing time attending the National Conference in Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) in November of 2018, it was held in South Padre Island, Texas. Writing Centers and Studios from all over the Untied States came together to present on research that they had done in their studios. Some of the sessions were more interactive and offered writing consultants who attended a way to think about and approach their writing. My favorite sessions delt with how to avoid and address racism in studio/center spaces from both consultants and writers alike, as well as one on how to think about our own privaliges and how they effect our lives.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are some of your strengths and weakness that you believe are in your own writing. I think that it is important to address these so that your tutor knows some specifics to looks out for. As well as what kinds of comments you have recieved from these assignements in the past, they can give you great advice on what to work on the next time.

Another important thing for me would be to think about your goals for the project, how do you want it to turn out? If your tutor understands that clearly they will be better able to help you!

Details

I will request $10.75 an hour (with a 1 hour minimum) for working with a student as that is minimum wage where I work and nessesary for me to be able to support myself. HOWEVER I am willing to operate on a sliding scale based on individual students needs, and will be willing to accept less for students who are:

*Part of the LGBTQ+ community

*Minority students who experience the ill effects of institutionalized (or outward and direct) racism in their lives.

*Houseless or not financially supported by their family

*Are supporting children or dependants

*Experienced occupational discrimination or discrimination based on ableism

*Have immigration related expenses

*Are a returning citizen who has been denied work due to incarceration

Please understand that my sliding scale policy is meant to help you, while still allowing me to be compensated for my work as a professional.
