About Deanne

I enjoy helping my students become better communicators, whether that is through their college essay, a high school English paper or a journalism feature story.

I taught journalism and photography at a high school for 33 years. I am certified as an English teacher as well. My most recent tutoring experiences have been with high school students and a pre-med student who needed assistance with her medical school applications.

Trailblazer (2005) by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators

Edith Fox King Award (2002) by the Interscholastic League Press Conference

Golden Apple Award (presented by Westlake Student Council to recognize faculty members)

I have also coached 5 journalism contests for the annual University Interscholastic League for 33 years

Teaching combined my desire to work with teenagers and my love for writing, design, journalism and photography.

I was a journalism teacher for 33 years at a well-respected public high school in Austin. In addition to teaching, I have co-authored a book for high school photographers and their advisers. I have tutored on the side for many years, helping students with college essays, etc.

I LOVE helping young writers find their voices.

Meet them where they are. Get to know them. Read something they have written and discuss it with them. Ask what they hope to learn/gain/improve.

High school is my target, but I have tutored college graduates as well.

A pickle ball-playing friend of mine asked if I could help her daughter-in-law with her medical school applications. The daughter-in-law wanted to polish them and make sure they were error free. I spent about 8 hours with her over several weeks. A few days ago, she texted me to share the wonderful news that she was admitted to her first choice of med schools.
