About John
I've been teaching music, primarily drums and percussion, for nearly 30 years. I belive that a student matures at their own pace in their own way, dependant on his or her intrinsic talents and methods of communication and comprehension. I learn from my students as much as they lrearn from me.
Every moment I am teaching, I am revisiting the fundamental components of the craft I have embraced. To teach is to learn through the eyes of another. I strive to set the stage for accomplishment and improvement, growth, excitement for the artform. I evaluate the musical level my students have achieved, and offer keys to open the next door, the next level of achievement, and to then take it to the next. Music is fun, but it is also a study, a focus, a purpose. I enjoy the balance between these things and so do my students.
I began palying the drums when I was about 12 yrs old. I took private lessons for 7-ish years and enrolled in music school at the local university at age 16. I studied percussion performance for several years, and was first chair in the Washington Idaho Symphony for 3 years, playing history's greaties music from all over the world.
I moved to Seattle WA, and played/recorded with countless singer/songwriters, bands, orchestras, and musical theater. Upon moving to the Bay Area I have done the same.

Working with a new student starts with evaluation of their understanding of the instrument and their skillset. I walk through the fundamantals, discuss some history, inquire about goals and develop an image of what should happen in the next few visits.
Most kids want to play their favorite song. Some adults want to understand how it all works. The end result is the same- start from the beginning, as much as need be, and set the stage for accomplishment in a meaningful way.
