About Peggy
I have been an adjunct professor of art for Saddleback College for 3 years. I teach intermediate and figurative, portraiture painting and drawing. I have taught Intermediate and Advanced Painting in Oil, Pastel, Acrylic and Gouache.
Additionally.. I offer painting and drawing classes out of my studio. I specialize in figurative and portrait painting. I moved from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, NM in late 2019. I have taught classes at the New Mexico Art League. Since covid, I have been teaching private classes out of my studio in Albuquerque, NM.
My studio can accommodate up to 6 students. Classes run from a 5 day workshop, to 10 weeks, to an Ongoing class. My last ongoing class lasted two years.
We provide easels and drawing benches. Art supplies are not included. We serve beverages. You are welcome to bring snacks or a lunch. We have off street parking in our lot.
What you will learn: How to draw and paint from a live model. How to prepare a support. ( canvas, linen, metal or wood panel ) How to mix flesh tones ( traditional & modern ) palettes. Mediums covered: Oil, Pastel, Acrylic and Water-media
Prefer students with some experience drawing from a model. You do not have to be proficient. We'll get to that!
The curriculum is geared to traditional atelier standards, which is not taught often in colleges or universities.. even art schools. What you will get is a lot! Skills that will take you to the next level. Also best practices in how to work from the ground up... literally. That means how to properly prime a canvas, drawing, creating a good composition, painting supply knowledge, mediums, palettes, application and more.
What you will achieve: 2 to 3 paintings executed (within the long term classes) with a good understanding of painting the figure / portrait from life.

I think that what I receive from teaching far outweighs what I give to students. Most importantly.. seeing a student excell in their work is tremendously gratifying. Painting and drawing is complex. Contrary to perception, it takes time to understand what you are doing as an artist. If I can help a student learn to work thru all that complexity to where it reflects in their work.. I am overjoyed. There is nothing better than that. I am doing my job.
The second most important accomplishment is that I have become a better artist, myself. My work flourishes from this exchange. Developing a curriculum for a class, takes some doing... research and practice. The more I know, the more I apply that knowledge to my work and the stronger my work has become. It's an ongoing experience. This is valuable to me.
Art (painting and drawing ) has influenced my entire life. What I can bring to the table, other than years of experience, is inspiration and enthusiasm. I have that in abundance!
I worked in the film industry, as a makeup artist, for many years. The film industry financed my art education. One day a colleague, who taught painting, invited me to apply for a teaching position at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, CA. I got the job and taught for 3 years until I moved from California to New Mexico. I have taught at the New Mexico Art League, in Albuquerque, NM for two years. I have lived here 4 years. During covid, I started teaching out of my studio in ABQ online and then in person. I have been teaching privately, in my studio, for 2 years. I will also be teaching an Art History Class at the University of New Mexico soon. The subject of the class will be Women Artists Through-Out History.

For Drawing and Painting Classes:
Introduction of art materials and how to use them. This is very important throughout the class. Starting on Beginning projects and working up to more difficult assignments. Starting with limited color and working up to a full palette. In drawing, I start with basic drawing exercises and work up to more advanced drawing. Portrait or Figurative would be an example.
I have worked between college age students through older adults.
I have worked infrequently with children but at the present time, I am not looking for children students.
I would advise a prospective student to look for a teacher that has the experience in the medium that you are wanting instruction in. It's better that the teacher has had academic and professional experience as an artist, as well as teaching experience.
In 2011, I founded Studio C Gallery, in Los Angeles, CA. I lived for 8 years at the Santa Fe Art Colony in DTLA, where the gallery was located. Studio C Gallery produced 3 exhibitions per year. One of the annual exhibition events was a benefit fund raiser for a non-profit organization. The exhibitions raised money for L.A. Waterkeeper, Wild Horse Sanctuary, Return to Freedom, Dream Catcher of L.A. and Tree People.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some students know ahead of time, what they want to get out of a class. Most do not know until they start taking a class. A student will pretty quickly find out how committed they are to the class, once they start class. I advise students to give a class at least 4-6 weeks minimum. Many times a student is learning something quite new. The information being given will come to light as you go along. There is a lot to learn, especially with drawing and painting. Allow yourself some time to absorb it. Try not to feel self-conscious. You are not alone.
I think it is a good idea to ask questions of the teacher, during class if you do not understand something. Always speak up. I enjoy answering technical questions. It is important to me, as a teacher, that all students understand the process at hand. Additionally I often email extra painting or drawing demos or pertinent information to my students between classes. I often do a live demo in class or individually at the easel of a student. We as a class, have also organized a field trip outing together.
I do give assignments in my classes. Consistency in a student's class work is important in developing one's skills, which means it is an advantage to work more than one day a week, if one can. One learns faster the more work that one does. If a student doesn't understand something or has a feeling that they are not learning something efficiently, you must come to me immediately. I want to help you. You will find that I am open to my student's individual needs. And btw... I have had a student with a hearing disability in one of my classes. I made sure that she could hear me above anything else.
My studio is on the ground floor. If you are disabled, I will make accommodations for you. We have a ramp for anyone to bring supplies in or if you are wheel chair bound. It's a good idea to talk about it with me beforehand.

#2 Option: Ongoing. Beginning to Intermediate Painting Class. $150 deposit.
$150. @ month, per student, 3 hour class with or without model. Must give 30 day notice when student decides to leave class. Deposit returned with a 30 day notice. Highly in depth class in oil painting. Meets one day per week. Extra Lab day option offered by appointment. $25.
Note: Some Drawing will be covered in this class.
Note: Pastel can be applied as an Ongoing Class too.
#3 Option: 10 Week Pastel Painting Class $375. per student 3 hour class. One day per week. Highly in-depth class in pastel painting. Meets one day per week.
#4 Option: 5 Day Workshop in Beginning Drawing or Painting. $200. per student. 3 hour class with or without model. Covering Basic Beginning Drawing, multi- medium or Basic Beginning Painting technique is oil or acrylic.
