About Alan
I am a classical double bassist with 15 years of experience in playing and studying the instrument. I would be more than happy to teach students of any level looking to work on any type of repertoire. I have studied both French (overhand) and German (underhand) bow technique and am capable of playing/teaching in either bow hold. I also have knowledge in music theory, both on paper, as well as how it applies to the music we play.
I am currently a graduate student at the Thornton School of Music in the University of Southern California, studying under David Allen Moore of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I have a Bachelors of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a Masters of Music degree from USC. Apart from my education, I have performance experience with professional ensembles, as well as with studio recording.
I strive to be a professional performing musician, but that goal also involves teaching. The love that I have for music and bass playing is something hope to inspire my students with, and having the opportunity to share the skills and knowledge that I develop about the double bass is something that I greatly value.
I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in bass performance from Oberlin Conservatory and USC Thornton School of Music, respectively. Ontop of studying bass with renowned teachers at those schools, I also learned quite a bit about general music topics like music theory and history, among any other classes I took. I have done and am currently doing some performing with professional ensembles in the LA area, as I am still a graduate student in USC. Some of that involves studio recording work, and some of that involves orchestral work. Through all of these experiences in addition to teaching students on the side, I have developed a thorough understanding of bass pedagogy and what steps to take in order to help my students improve.

The first thing I like to do is to establish what they are hoping to learn in lessons. Everyone has a different idea as to what they would like to do with the instrument, so it is helpful for me to understand exactly what that is. That way, I can have a clearer goal as to what I should be having them work on, and more importantly, how to keep them inspired and motivated to continue working on it. Next, I like to learn about any prior experience that they have had with the bass, if any at all. This is just to see if there are any skills that they have already acquired that I can continue to build upon. If the student is completely knew to the instrument, then I will go through a series of exercises for them to have a basic understanding of what bass techniques involve.
