About Justin
Today we live in a world where climate change is often doubted or denied, vaccines are considered by some to be more harmful than helpful, and the the people's trust in science and expertise diminishes by the day. It's my goal to help be a driving force behind educating the next generation of scientists that will help solve our most pressing global issues. Strengths include microbiology, molecular biology (including next generation sequencing), human genetics, and immunology.
During my career I've discovered new ways human pathogens resist antibiotics and the immune system, validated novel mutations that allow tuberculosis to survive antimicrobial therapy, and reported clinical diagnostic results for thousands of patients undergoing genetic testing. I have taught numerous students in a laboratory setting as a microbiology lab teaching assistant, in a seminar format as a graduate researcher, and on a one-on-one basis as a lab mentor. Additionally, I have given dozens of talks at group meetings throughout my graduate, post-doc, and clinical genetic diagnostics career path. As a published author, I have over 140+ citations of my peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapter contributions ((concealed information)
I am a graduate of the University of Rhode Island (B.S. Microbiology, 2008) and of Emory University (Ph.D. Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, 2014), where I specialized in microbiology, antibiotic resistance, host innate immunity, and molecular biology. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta in 2018, where I discovered several novel markers of isoniazid resistance in multi- and extensively drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

I initially taught microbiology laboratory at Emory University, along with one-on-one molecular biology teaching as a graduate student (hands on). I fell in love with conveying the awesomeness that is molecular bio and microbiology while giving talks on my own research as a graduate student, and continued to enjoy teaching others in a more professional capacity at the CDC and Fulgent. Today, I am making it a bigger part of my career since one of my family members got a job at a nearby academy and it inspired me to do more!
