I first try to guage the level of understanding the student already has, and what areas or topics they struggle in specifically. While discussing this with the student I am typically able to determine how they learn best, and I begin planning lessons. As we work through the subject I frequently check in with the student to be sure things are starting to make a little more sense, and adjust lessons accordingly.
I always did best with tutors close to my own age with fresh experience in the subject I needed help with. I've found that while older tutors/teachers have more experience, they typically didn't do a good job of simplifying the topic enough for me to understand.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
While I always found it annoying when professors told us not to come to office hours with vague questions, or saying "I don't understand any of it", it is hard to tutor an entire subject area. Try your best to single out specific topics, theories, principles, or lessons to help us begin to explain them better. For me, it was easier to ask for help by bringing example questions for a topic, instead of listing the topic itself.
