I have been playing the bagpipes for 30 years and also am a middle school ELA teacher. I offer pointed feedback and helpful tips, and I also am patient and encouraging.

We start with half-hour lessons on the practice chanter. You will need to purchase a practice chanter and the book "Beginning the Bagpipe" by Piper Major Sandy Jones. We work through the tutorial, beginning with correct hand position, learning scales, left- and right-hand exercises, gracenotes, and tunes. When the student has mastered 10 tunes on the chanter, we move on the the bagpipes. The process from chanter to pipes can take 1-2 years.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before taking up the bagpipes (or any musical instrument), students should consider whether they have the time to dedicate to the learning process. The only way to learn is through consistent practice.
