About Monique
I began learning ASL as a student at California State University, Northridge in 2015 with the goal of becoming an ASL/ English interpreter. After two years I was accepted into their program where I began interpreter education and training while continuing my regular course work. During my time in the program, I was also paired with an interpreting student in a lower cohort as a mentor. During this time we scheduled days to meet up and discuss her interpreting work along with other factors that can play a role such as nerves or confidence. This experience allowed me to bond with another student and create a safe space for her to share her work, her fears, and her struggles. This one on one mentorship was beneficial and a lot of fun!
I graduated from CSUN in May 2019 with a B.A. In Deaf Studies and Religious Studies. As a recent graduate, I will be able to relate to the students and the various stress factors they are experiencing. In my interpreting program, there was a heavy emphasis on analyzing work and giving feedback. This was not only for ourselves but for our peers as well. This gave me experience working with others, giving constructive feedback, discussing solutions, and exploring different strategies of learning. This is a subject and a community I care about very deeply. As someone who holds this subject close to heart and genuinely enjoys it, I would love to become a tutor for a student with the same passion. I will be able to relate to the difficulties I had when I was first learning and the strategies I employed to overcome them!
I currently have an online tutoring client and I love working with them and figuring out what they’re looking for in a tutor, the challenges, they’re experiencing, and creating lesson plans to work on with them!

If you have the option to work with a Deaf tutor... DO IT.
I am hearing. Everything I know I have learned from my very generous and intelligent Deaf instructors, as well as a few hearing interpreters. If you are looking for a more cultural understanding of Deaf Studies definitely go to a Deaf person.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Watch over any recordings that you have of yourself signing or interpreting (if you don't have any - make one!). Notice areas you want to improve and areas that look really clear to you. Be aware of your process and any moments you maybe feel "stuck" or unsure of how you want to express something. Knowing your signing will help you work with your tutor!
