About Kira

The part of the job that makes me excited is the moment the student understands a concept and is able to master the task at hand and overcomes their obstacles. I have experience in both interpreting and being a paraeducator. Those work experiences enables me to address different situations in regards to signing.

I enjoy teaching and I'm actually working toward getting my teaching credentials and hope to have my own DHH classroom. The expressions on students' faces when they get a concept is priceless and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Teaching is a tough job but knowing that I can make a difference and be not just someone's educator but their confidant and advocate is truly rewarding

I got into the classroom by luck, really.  I realized that I did not want to continue to work as an interpreter but I know I wanted to work in education.  One day, I had the opportunity to work in the classroom and that's when I realized that it was what I was supposed to be doing all this time.

I completed an interpreting program and worked in the field for two years.  I, then, started working for a local school district as a classroom aide in a Deaf and Hard of Hearing classroom.  Although my title states aide, the teacher I work with gives me the liberty to teach concepts to our students and when she is not present, I ensure that learning continues by stepping up to the plate and taking charge of the classroom.

When I work with a new student, I get to know them by chatting and trying to make the interaction as comfortable as I can so that the student can feel free to ask me for help.  I think it's important to form that bond not only to assess the language needs of the student but to also build rapport.

I have worked with Deaf students who are at grade level and have language models at home, Deaf students who are severly language deprived and have intellectual delay because of the language deprivation, and lastly, I have worked with Deaf students who have additional disabilites and have limited mobility. In addition, I have also worked with college students who were taking beginning ASL classes.

I would suggest that before deciding on a tutor or a teacher, the student should try to meet with the tutor /teacher to see if they are compatible as far as signing style goes. Also, to ask the teacher if they have experience or exposure to the topic that the student needs help with.

One recent event that I am fond of was my brother introducing himself to my Deaf colleagues by using American Sign Language.  It was terrific to see that what I have taught my brother has stuck with him throughout the years and he remembers the importance of attempting to communicate with Deaf people through ASL.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider asking the teacher if they have worked in the grade level the student is in, how long they've been signing (if the teacher is hearing), and where the teacher is from--just in case there's a difference in regional signs.
