We Make Math Easy
Mathematics is the only subject where the role of the assumptions we make is obvious. Change the assumptions and you change the mathematics - it's that simple.
Math is not just about computations. Learning mathematics can teach a student to think logically and carefully which helps a student to do the same in other areas of life.
Mathematics is a fascinating subject which is often made booring by elementary teachers with little appreciation for the real beauty of the subject. This is a harsh verdict, but I believe it's true.
I enjoy tutoring math because I can make the subject interesting and help the student to appreciate mathmatical thinking, which can help the student to think logically about other life problems.
I started teaching after I earned my PhD in Mathematics. I was teaching as a career for 5 years, then I consulted and entered the computer industry where I used my background in mathematics to develop many computer algorithms for software packages. I have been tutoring students as a hobby ever since I left university since it's difficlt to earn enough to live on doing tutoring exclusively unless I charge unreasonable rates.
I have a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Southern California, and a Masters in Statistics from the University of Michigan. I also have a Junior College teaching certification issued by the State of California.
I taught Mathematics at the following universities: University of Southern California; Louisiana State University Baton Rouge, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Arizona State University

My process is different for K-12 and college students. College students are usually adults, K-12 students are usually not. With college students who are not remedial math students I rely on the student to tell me what help is needed. For K-12 students and college remedial level students I use the following procedures.
Mathematics is a hierarchical subject. By this I mean the student must understand concepts on each level in order to be comfortable progressing to the next level. So it's essential to determine the level a student in on to know how best to help.
I have a set of assessments to determine the relative grade level perfomance of a student in different areas. The first session is an evaluation session and is free of charge.
After I determine the level of competence of a student, I work from two directions. First I work to bring the student up to level in areas where the student's understanding is weak. Second I work with the student on current homework and class projects as needed. In this second effort, younger or less prepared students are given more direction.
I have worked with the following types of students
Remedial college students who had difficulty in the past; brilliant students who are unmanageable in the classroom due to behavioral issues; average students who are just trying to pass the next course.

I have different pricing depending on the difficulty of the material. That is, for grade school (K-6) I charge less than for Junior High and High School classes.
I offer a 20% discount on rates if the student pays in advance 10 or more tutoring sessions.
