About Gill
I’m an experienced secondary English teacher and current Head of English, with many years of experience working with young people across KS3 and GCSE. I love teaching English, but I’m particularly interested in helping students who have lost confidence, feel stuck or simply don’t see themselves as readers.
Alongside academic English tuition, I specialise in reader engagement and behaviour change, helping young people develop the habits, confidence and motivation needed to read more independently.
I’m friendly, encouraging and realistic in my approach. I believe progress comes from understanding the individual student, identifying what is getting in their way and giving them achievable ways to move forward, whether that means improving a GCSE grade or rediscovering reading altogether.

My lessons are supportive, focused and tailored to the individual student. For English tuition, I identify the specific skills holding a student back and build confidence through clear explanation, modelling and targeted practice. I can support students across KS3 and GCSE English Language and Literature, whether they need to catch up, consolidate learning or push towards the highest grades.
I also offer specialist reader engagement coaching for children and teenagers who can read but rarely choose to. This takes a different approach from traditional English tutoring, focusing on reading habits, confidence, motivation and finding the right kind of reading for the individual. My aim is not simply to get young people through English exams, but to help them become more confident, independent readers.
