About Brigitte

Hello! I am an experienced and considerate tutor who can help pupils achieve maximum potential in their 11+/ 13 +/SATS/GCSEs and A Levels. I believe that study outside of the classroom is essential in developing intellectual insight and enjoyment in relation to the chosen topic. I aim to help students in crafting coherent essays and exam answers. My previous pupils have excelled in their exams. My GCSE students tend to achieve a level eight and nine in English Literature/Language. This is because I break down how to answer each exam question into effective steps that they can revise and practise. Recent 11+ students have been accepted into Kingston Grammar School, Harrow School, City of London School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls, Emmanuel School, St Benedict's, Bexley Grammar School, Sutton Grammar School, Bancroft's School, Woodford County High School, Streatham and Clapham High School and Christ's Hospital. I have worked for Ace Tuition; a company that excels in equipping students with the skills they need to get selected for top grammar schools. I have a degree in English and Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London. I have a passion for literature which is crucial for any tutor hoping to encourage enthusiasm and a willingness to engage fully with the task at hand. I will tailor each class to the individual to help their understanding and inspire confidence. I can create homework tasks/ mock exam questions/presentations, answer questions, critique drafts, analyse texts and teach effective methodologies to achieve high grades. I look forward to meeting you! School : BA in English and Creative writing from Goldsmiths, University of London Prizes and Scholarships : Winner of Cuirt New Writing Prize 2020, and the 2014 National Comparative Literature and Culture Art Writing Other Qualifications : Employee of Ace Tuition. I designed exam questions, edit texts, construct narratives, create tutorials on grammar and language to help students with their 11+ exam.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Engaging with literature, whether through reading, crafting fiction or discussing books has always been a joyous and enriching experience for me. Whilst studying for my degree (English with Creative Writing), I decided to share my knowledge and insight into texts through private tuition. Six years later, it still thrills me when a pupil comprehends deeper meanings and symbolism in the texts on their course or finds the confidence to weave a compelling narrative on the page.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

English literature and creative writing are fantastic topics to teach. Unlike other subjects, English allows for a personal approach, whether through analysis or through descriptive writing. Each lesson varies according to the critical and creative responses of my pupils, making teaching very pleasurable and nuanced. There is enjoyment to be found in all aspects of teaching and engaging with texts. I relish the wide variety of books I get to teach; one day I will be discussing Shakespeare, or 19th-century texts by Dickens, or 20th-century texts such as Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm, and the next day I will be reading the Percy Jackson series with younger pupils, and hearing children read aloud from Roald Dahl for the first time.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was lucky to have several inspiring English teachers when I was at school. I will never forget their vivid insights on texts, and the confidence they inspired within their pupils, so that we felt able to contribute our own thoughts and impressions. During my degree, several of my teachers were published authors and poets. Their generosity of spirit, patient listening and detailed feedback are qualities that I too seek to emulate as a teacher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must create an enjoyable atmosphere, a well-structured lesson, and engage with each pupil's specific style of learning. An exemplary tutor must be inspiring and confident, a wonderful listener and a clear communicator.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have borne witness to incredible evolutions in pupils' understanding of literature and ability to write brilliant essays, transactional writing or fiction. When I first started tutoring, I was thrilled to see a particular pupil thriving in their mocks and then their real exams after learning how to deconstruct quotes and analyse language/structure techniques. It was my first time seeing someone who was initially on a low grade, transcend grade expectations. It taught me that no matter where a pupil is on their journey of engaging with literature and language, their end goals are all the same: deeper analysis of texts, a broad accumulation of ambitious vocabulary, and grades that mirror their new understanding and skill sets.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

The only difficulty I can conceive of is the general societal truth of teenagers not engaging with books with the enthusiasm they had as a child. I have some teenage pupils who are true bookworms, but most often this isn't the case, books have to be reintroduced as something joyful and enriching to engage with.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a true passion for teaching and a true passion for literature; combining these passions is a joyous experience for me. My aim is for children and teenagers to discover the confidence within themselves to voice opinions on texts and engage with the wider context of literature itself as an art form, a historical reflection of society and a place of valuable expression.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions?

I would like to consider myself as Superprof due to my extensive experience in tutoring, my record of pupils achieving high grades, and my ability to engage with pupils' individual learning styles.
