About Robert
My academic training was in engineering: I received my master's and doctoral degrees in metallurgy and materials science from Columbia University, and my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. In graduate school I worked for several years as a teaching assistant, which included some lecturing, grading, and tutoring. After graduating, I worked as an engineer and accrued more than 20 years of experience in various segments of the technology industry, including aerospace, consumer electronics, and electrical/electronic manufacturing.

When I start working with a new student, I like to have them send me in advance some materials related to the subject matter that they want to work on—for example, homework problems or practice exams are very helpful. That gives me a sense of the student's current level, and also allows me to prepare for the tutoring session so that the student can obtain the maximum value from our time together. In the event that the subject matter of interest to the student turns out to be outside my area of expertise, I will let the student know right away that they would be better served by finding a different tutor.
