About Kelly
I have been teaching in the English language field for forty years, but my teaching is always changing to keep up with the latest research and methods. This is so important to me that I am a doctoral student in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education, and have completed all of my coursework. The length of time I have been teaching allowed me to have many different opportunities and teaching environments, and every one of them has contributed to my teaching expertise. I don't have a 'favorite' group to work with; I simply love teaching and learning from various ages, language levels, and cultural backgrounds!

I believe it is critical to make a personal connection with each student - learning preferences, background, experiences, goals - and then use these to craft my lessons and methods.
I do not have a 'typical' lesson plan, as each student and their goals are unique. However, each lesson would include a brief time to chat about what has occurred since our last meeting (I use that to learn about the student as well as to informally check their communication skills), a quick review of the previous lesson, an introduction to any new vocabulary essential to their learning needs for the present lesson, skills checks throughout the lesson to note comprehension or the need to review, an explanation of any homework assigned (if appropriate), and a final opportunity for questions.
My classes are always flexible and individualized, with relationships of lesson content to the student's learning goals built in at all times (i.e., if the student is working at a hospital, then vocabulary and reading materials would be related to their occupation or the one they are striving for, writing materials would be related to daily writing needs, etc.). I pride myself on keeping the courses interesting and interactive, as that is much more enjoyable for both students and teachers. Finding ways to laugh during each lesson is also critical, both as a way of engaging students and lessening any anxiety that might be present. Finally, I always teach on a first name basis for both student and teacher, as long as it is culturally appropriate and comfortable for the student, as I learn from my students just as they learn from me.
I have taught ESL for students from preschool to adults, and from totally non-English speaking to those advanced enough to be in masters degree coursework in English. I have taught in homes, K-12 schools, universities, factories, churches, etc. Class sizes have ranged from individuals to large classes, both in-person and online.
I would love to add more English language learners into my circle of international acquaintances!
