About Josh
My passion for education begun during my undergraduate degree in English at University College London. During this time, I developed an appreciation for the value of thinking critically and expanding one's mind through academic study. After completing my studies, I have worked in a number of different fields including freelance writing and, most recently, publishing.

I have hundreds of hours tutoring experience, and my students have achieved success in both entrance exams and scholarships for top schools.
Each lesson consists of a range of different exercises all designed to gradually develop the key skills required for proficiency at both the writing and comprehension components of English from 11+ up to A Level, plus specific support for essay writing at Undergraduate level.
Up to 13+, there are two main categories of exercises: 1) those which develop technical processing skills such as vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling and reading speed; 2) those which work on instilling key concepts such as inference, description, technique, purpose, planning and genre, to the point that these ideas become second nature to the students' way of thinking about the subject.
The other side of my teaching is the mental and emotional side. The most central aspect of this is an empathetic and child-centred way of relating to my students, always seeking to understand them as unique individuals and keeping the question of how I would feel if I was in their shoes at the heart of every interaction we have. By relating to my students in this way, I aim to empower them to feel more relaxed and confident about their studies, and thus develop their autonomy and resilience, since my experiences have taught me that these are two of the most fundamental skills to success and wellbeing in both education and life generally.
As well as thus developing my students' mental skills through the way I generally relate to them, I also explicitly discuss the mental challenges they are facing whenever issues with motivation or focus arise, and have specific exercises and frameworks learnt from my experiences in both sport and education (e.g. Timothy Gallwey's Inner Game coaching methodology) which I use to help them work on these areas when appropriate.
Another aspect of my teaching is setting targeted homework for my students to complete in between sessions to ensure that they are reinforcing and supplementing the skills we are developing during the teaching time as part of a comprehensive and integrated wider programme.
I have a recent basic DBS check.

I’d recommend Josh to anyone looking for an English tutor. He’s helped my daughter with her +11 preparation hugely, and had always been friendly and generous with his time.
Josh has been a great tutor for my son, and has a real passion for the subject. He is friendly, has clear lesson plans, and is generous with his time, and my son's comprehension and writing skills have improved significantly. Would definitely recommend him.
