About T'Keyah Crystal
I am an accomplished entertainment professional and educator who has performed and taught across the United States and beyond. Best known for my starring roles on several television series, my first love is theater. I started performing in my grandparents' living room as a child, and studied theater, dance, voice, and pantomime in high school. Before graduating I began writing, producing, directing, choreographing and starring in variety shows open to the public. I earned a Theatre degree with honors from Florida A&M University (FAMU) and have since performed in twenty plus films and more than fifty live theater productions. I produce independent films, and write and direct for stage and television, including my original web series, 'The Cool Crystal Show.' In addition to being a series regular on 'In Living Color,' 'On Our Own,' 'The Show,' 'Waynehead,' 'Cosby,' 'That's So Raven,' and 'There's Johnny,' I did guest spots on several other television shows. For more than twenty years, I have presented my “Tools of the Trade” actor preparation lectures and workshops to working and aspiring performers across and outside of the US and was an Artist-in-Residence at FAMU where I created and taught an Acting for the Camera class. My classes are on the creative and the business sides of entertainment and creative writing. I tailor the content to suit the needs of my students. A perpetual student, I have taken Fitzmaurice, Shurtleff and Meisner classes and am a certified actor and teacher of the Michael Chekhov actor training method. After working part-time toward a master’s degree in psychology, I switched gears and am currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts, (Performance & Pedagogy) and a Doctor of Fine Arts (Theatre: Arts Administration and Acting/Directing) at Texas Tech University (TTU) where I also wrote, directed and produced two new shows, teach theater majors and won the 1st place prize for playwriting at TTU's graduate school’s 2024 Humanities Conference. My honors include NAACP Theatre Awards, The HistoryMakers, The Chicago African American History Makers, and Who’s Who Among Black Americans.
About the lesson

All languages in which the lesson is available :
English
- I work with students on specific audition or performance materials, or on general performance methods and practices.
- I help performers and writers recognize and hone the talents, skills and qualities that are strongest and / or most unique in them.
Performers:
- For audition and performance material, I help students break down scenes, analyze and develop their roles, find appropriate beats and intentions, explore character range, and find the truth in the scene and character that makes performance three dimensional.
- For general instruction and preparedness and depending upon what is needed, I review brand possibilities, audition and performance materials, find appropriate
audition materials, provide personalized performance instruction using various performance training methods including Chekhov, Shurtleff, Viewpoints, and classical mime. I also coach career plans and general business preparedness.
Writers:
-For completed materials (scripts, scenes and monologues), I act as a reader, assessing formatting, consistency, genre accuracy, character and story development and distinctive qualities. I will also note grammatical errors.
- For aspiring writers with unfinished materials, I discuss targeted or envisioned projects and explore with the writer avenues to begin or continue.
- For short material (3-5 pages), I will read the copy with the writer during our class session, and immediately discuss the possibilities for going forward.
- For large projects (20+ pages), I speak with the student about the project, read the material and make my assessment privately, and then meet with the student again to discuss my written assessment and suggestions for improvement.
- For midsize projects (6-19 pages). the student can decide whether I will read the material during our class together and immediately discuss the project, or read and make written notes on the project privately and then meet with the student again to discuss my written assessment and suggestions for improvement.

T’Keyah Crystal Keymah is truly the embodiment of art. I first met her as a student in her “Acting for the Camera” course at Florida A&M University, where I was fortunate enough to be part of her class. From that moment on, she became “Dr. T” to me.
Years later, I still benefit from her wisdom and continue to seek her guidance through one-on-one coaching sessions whenever I prepare for a project. She has an incredible gift for teaching—breaking things down with clarity and depth, always exploring the who, what, when, where, and why.
What makes Dr. T extraordinary is that she doesn’t just teach for the moment; she equips her students with tools they carry for a lifetime. Acting, after all, is art imitating life—and she brings that truth into every lesson.
I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is an amazing artist, mentor, and teacher who gives so much of herself to her students. Simply put, she’s the best.View more recommendations
