About Me: A Journey of 36 Years of Empowering Students Through Writing and Literacy

For over 36 years, I have been guiding students on an incredible journey of discovery—helping them unlock the power of words, find their unique voice, and achieve their full potential as writers and communicators. My passion for teaching English began as a simple love for stories and language, and it quickly grew into a lifelong mission to inspire others to share in that love. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with students from all walks of life—each with their own unique challenges and goals. Together, we’ve turned struggles into breakthroughs and aspirations into realities.

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve always believed that writing is more than just a skill; it’s a tool for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. My students and I have explored everything from the fundamentals of grammar to the art of storytelling. With patience and encouragement, I’ve helped young learners write their first coherent essays, supported high school students as they crafted standout college applications, and guided adult learners through professional writing for career advancement.

One of my most rewarding experiences was with Sarah, a bright but anxious high school student who struggled with writing essays. She found it difficult to organize her thoughts and express them clearly, often feeling overwhelmed by the process. We worked together on breaking down writing into manageable steps—starting with brainstorming and outlining—until, over time, Sarah gained confidence in her abilities. By the end of the year, she was not only writing well-organized essays but also enjoying the process of crafting arguments and analyzing texts. Her final project, a beautifully written essay on social justice literature, was selected as one of the top submissions in her school’s literary contest.

My Teaching Method and Techniques:

I believe every learner is unique, so my approach to teaching writing and literacy is highly personalized. I use a blend of creative exercises, structured practice, and interactive discussions to develop core writing skills—whether it’s grammar, style, clarity, or structure. My lessons emphasize active learning, where students engage with real texts, write in various genres, and receive tailored feedback to improve both technical skills and creative expression. I create a positive and encouraging environment where students can confidently grow as writers.

A Typical Lesson Plan:

Each lesson is carefully tailored to the student’s current level and goals. We start with a warm-up activity to get into a writing mindset, followed by a targeted mini-lesson on a specific writing concept, such as narrative structure, persuasive techniques, or effective research methods. Students then work on writing exercises, drafting, or revising their own work with my guidance. We wrap up with a review and goal-setting for the next session. Along the way, I introduce tips and strategies to help improve literacy, from reading comprehension techniques to building vocabulary.
