About Christine
I have twenty years of experience teaching students in college / university, high school, and tutoring center settings. My strong belief is that writing is a skill, not a talent. Anyone can learn to write clearly, concisely, and effectively for academic and professional purposes. While a flair for words and an imagination help in creative writing, these skills can be acquired and developed with practice. The majority of my students enjoy my methods as I like to make learning fun, and many students who have taken academic (essay) writing with me as college students have grown to love writing and to feel confident in their ability to write well after only one semester. Writing is a joy and I want to share that joy with students. The ability to write clearly and effectively also is a necessary skill in life and I want to help students write well so that they can get write an essay that gets them into the college of their choice, gets them the essential scholarship or grant to help with expenses, helps them pass the ACT or SAT, or helps them write that short story or novel that's been aching to jump out of their hearts and come to life on paper.
In addition to my years of experience in teaching students and my own failures and successes as a writer, I have three formal degrees: a B.A. in English in Writing and a B.A. in Secondary Education from Loyola University, New Orleans (graduated summa cum laude), and a Master's of Fine Arts with Distinction from Hofstra University, Long Island, New York.

As a teacher, I feel my main role is to be a coach: to be someone who has walked this road and can share techniques, wisdom, and guidance. I am a mentor and my main desire is to help my students succeed--and hopefully to enjoy the journey.
While creative writing and academic writing serve different purposes, good writing is good writing, so I approach both topics in a similar way initially. The most important thing to learn how to write well is to learn the writing process. I can share a five-step approach to writing well. It is a technique--or a recipe, if you will--which is essential to improving one's writing. Part of the technique involves letting go of the perfectionism which stops one from writing. Another essential step is revision. Revision is vital to excellent writing. Anyone who wants to write something once and move on should not choose me as a tutor. Good writing is a process which has revision as its foundation and core.
Finally, critique is a main approach of my teaching. I know, from having taught writing for so long , that many students hate or fear writing because of having received many papers back with red ink all over them. Often the comments, such as "split infinitive" are meaningless to the student and, so, completely unhelpful. As a writer who has herself received both critique and criticism (they are not the same), I know that critique is important though, at times, difficult for a writer. Critique differs from criticism as criticism is about everything which is wrong. Critique is about what is GOOD about the writing and what needs improved (that's where revision comes in--improving the writing). I believe in giving both correction and affirmation, and I write extensive notes on papers.
Finally, as a writing teacher, I do deal with the "G" word: grammar. Many students who have grown up in the U.S. are afraid of grammar or, at least, they feel it is almost hopelessly confusing. Grammar, however, is simply the rules of a language. It is the instructions on how to play the game called communicating in English. Just as someone can learn the rules to an online game, anyone can learn English grammar. I have singled out U.S. English speakers because they often have had little education in grammar. Those people who have English as a second or third or fourth language often have had considerably more education in English grammar than native English speakers.
