About Martia

Hello! I'm Martia and I can't wait to meet you!

As a PGCE-qualified secondary school teacher with experience teaching in London secondary schools, international settings, and one-to-one environments, I specialise in English from Key Stage 1 through to A Level. My approach builds confidence, sharpens analytical skills, and fosters a genuine love for reading and writing.
Subjects Offered

A Level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas)

Literature: In-depth textual analysis of English set texts (e.g. Othello, The Great Gatsby, A Streetcar Named Desire), critical essay writing, contextual understanding, and support with NEA (coursework) comparing two texts.

Language: Analytical writing using English linguistic frameworks (lexis, grammar, discourse, phonology), exploration of language change and diversity, original writing for NEA with commentary, and exam practice based on real-life language data.

GCSE & IGCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Cambridge)

Literature: Study of set English texts (e.g. Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, and poetry anthologies), developing comparative essay skills, analysing unseen poetry, and writing critical responses under timed conditions.

Language: Focus on Paper 1 and 2 exam techniques (fiction and nonfiction), comprehension of 19th, 20th, and 21st century English texts, crafting transactional and imaginative writing, and strategies for achieving higher-level AO targets.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

Development of analytical and creative writing skills aligned with the English National Curriculum.

Reading and interpreting a range of texts, including Shakespeare, modern novels, and poetry.

Focus on sentence structure, paragraphing, vocabulary building, and introduction to GCSE-style tasks.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6, including SATs preparation)

Guided reading strategies using VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, Summary).

Grammar and punctuation aligned with KS2 SPaG expectations.

Creative writing for narrative and non-narrative forms.

Preparation for Year 6 SATs (reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation, and grammar tests).

Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)

Phonics development using Letters and Sounds or Little Wandle approaches.

Early reading comprehension and writing using simple sentence structures.

Encouraging confidence in storytelling, spelling, and basic grammar.

Support with Year 1 Phonics Screening and Year 2 SATs.

Approach
I support students in preparing for key assessments (Phonics Screening, SATs, 11+, GCSEs, A Levels), developing academic confidence, and enjoying the richness of English. Whether it's analysing Macbeth, structuring a persuasive argument, or laying strong literacy foundations in younger learners, lessons are tailored to individual goals and the requirements of the UK national curriculum and exam boards.

As a tutor, I focus on a student-centred approach that helps build both skills and confidence in English. My goal is to help students become more independent and prepared for exams by teaching clear strategies and providing lots of practice.

Each lesson is adapted to suit the student’s learning style and goals, with a focus on the skills needed for the UK curriculum and exam boards.

In English I help students:

Develop close reading skills by teaching them how to spot and explain literary techniques like symbolism, imagery, metaphors, similes, alliteration, and irony.

Understand characters, themes, story structure, and context, linking these to what examiners look for.

Write clear, organised essays using easy-to-follow paragraph structures like PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation).

Use model essays and sample answers to see how to use quotes and analyse texts well.

Practice writing essays under timed conditions and learn how to plan essays with mind maps or outlines.

Learn how to annotate texts by highlighting important quotes and symbols to prepare for exams and comparisons.

Learn key language terms like word choice, sentence structure, meaning, tone, and how language changes over time.

Improve reading skills like making inferences, summarising, and understanding the writer’s purpose and audience.

Practice writing different types of texts, such as letters, articles, and creative stories, focusing on using the right tone, style, and clear structure.

Use past papers and example answers to prepare for exams.

Learn how to break down questions, manage time in exams, and write clear answers using the PEE method.

Use revision methods like flashcards, quizzes, and teaching others to remember key ideas.

Revision & Exam Practice:

Practising active recall by answering questions from memory.

Writing essays and answers under timed conditions to get used to the exam format.

Using revision sheets that summarise key ideas, quotes, and important terms.

Marking texts with notes on important ideas and language features for quick review.

Creating a revision timetable to balance practice, review, and rest.

Looking back at mistakes and using feedback to improve.

Lessons are interactive and well-structured to help students feel confident and in control of their learning. Sessions usually last 60 minutes, with longer sessions available for more detailed support or exam prep.
