About Ben

Hi! My name is Ben, and I've been helping a wide range of students with their English skills for over ten years now. I used to live and work in Hong Kong, but am now back in my home country.

My years of teaching in Hong Kong taught me that the best teaching approach is one that is tailored to the student. I teach English because I love the language and the subject, and I want to help empower students to feel confident in their use of it, as well as helping them excel in their exams!

One of my main focuses has been preparing students for entry in independent schools in the UK. Having attended such a school myself, I'm deeply familiar with the challenges of the entrance process, and what it takes to do well in both the entrance interviews and exams, as well as helping parents navigate the somewhat daunting process of choosing a school that is right for their child. I also have lots of experience in teaching GCSE English Language and Literature, and the particular challenges of writing full and detailed answers in order to get good grades.

Overall, I believe that English is a subject that everyone can and should love, and I believe the best approach to teaching it is one that is both rigorous and fun!

About the lesson

I've been helping students prepare for a wide variety of exams over my tutoring career, including 11+ and 13+ ISEB school entrance exams, GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature (all exam boards, all the way up to SAT and A Levels. I have also spent many years helping students with their creative and argumentative essay writing skills.

Having worked for many years in Hong Kong, I have experience in teaching a variety of students from different cultures and backgrounds, and plenty of experience with second-language learners, and the specific challenges they face.

My lessons are typically 1 - 2 hours long, and can be taught face-to-face or online. I'm available to teach students from the ages of 8 - 18.
