About Sarah
I started out my career as a nurse (mainly working in Operating Theatres) and after many happy years decided to follow my love and passion for reading and writing and completed a BA in English Literature, followed by an MA in Creative Writing.
I have a recent (2026) Enhanced DBS and volunteer through a tutoring charity to provide support to students who are working below their potential. I have experience of working with SEND, particularly ADHD and autism.
I have also volunteered with an American non-profit who support creative writing globally. I took the lead opening up a new area and arranging in-person and online events to encourage creative writing at all levels from beginners to published.
I bring this enthusiasm to my lessons, wanting every student to have a positive experience, and to build on their self-confidence.

I'm passionate about students having access to education that centres their specific needs. Each tutoring session will be adapted to meet the individual need of the learner and their goals. I have experience of working with children with SEND, and those who are struggling to keep up in class through volunteering with a charity.
A typical lesson would have a focus or learning aim, such as Identifying key details from an extract for primary school aged students. KS4 students might have a lesson on understanding points of view, the conventions of article writing, or comparing writer's perspectives between two extracts.
An example structure of an hour long tutoring session would be a brief greeting and catch-up, and then a vocabulary introduction with words that will come up later in the lesson. Then a check-in with the technical terms of English - for example metaphor vs simile, onomatopoeia, sensory language - which will also be used in the lesson.
Next would be a read through of a piece of a story, article or poem with the student. Then they would be guided through identifying the key structures of the writing. In some tutoring sessions, particularly for older students there may be a writing task where they demonstrate their understanding of the lesson aims.
Students working towards SATS and GCSEs will have exam-style questions introduced. The aim will always be building a foundation of knowledge and skills that can be adapted for any question that they meet.
The first lesson will be free. This will be a friendly meeting where we discuss the goals for the student, and go through a gentle exercise to determine the areas for study for the initial sessions.
