About Michael
I taught English to hundreds of high school students over 11 years in elite classrooms in Johannesburg – and I’ve tutored many students, one-on-one, breaching the barriers and muck of their classes, helping them understand how questions are written, how to craft responses and how to use intelligence and skill, not brute force and rote learning, to gain the high marks they deserve. I have a Master's in Creative Writing, a BA Honors in Applied Linguistics and a BEd degree. So many kids are bright and capable, but they don’t get the validation they need in class to realize their dizzying potential. They need a champion in their corner, someone who’s worked with teenagers for years and knows how to leverage rapport, trust and joy to get them to excel. That’s how I taught in the classroom, and that’s how I tutor my clients today, whether they just need a boost before exams or they need help with everything. All good!

Getting marks up in English is hard. You can't study and cram your way there. What you need is someone in your corner who knows the system, who's taught hundreds of teens and young adults to build underlying skills, unpack questions and construct compelling arguments.
I was a teacher and lecturer for 11 years at elite private institutions in Johannesburg. I know what I'm doing.
Here's how I work:
• I review your marks and work, using my experience to pinpoint your challenges. This is the baseline.
• We work through underlying skills: literacy, knowledge construction, argumentation, critical thinking.
• I keep things fun and light. We need a rapport. Learning is psychological and motivational as much as it's about content.
• We build a reading programme to help you encounter language, develop vocab and expand your stylistic range
• I leverage my classroom and lecture hall experience. I know how to work young people, to get them to believe in themselves again and to discover the thrill of linguistic expression
