Teach basic everyday words first and simple phrases that they can use in everyday conversations such as introducing themselves, greeting people and placing orders at restaurants so that students can build up their confidence.
After giving them a basic introduction, I'd focus on pronunciation of Chinese alphabets and tones as they change the meaning of various phrases that otherwise sound similar.
After ensuring that they are correctly pronouncing the alphabets, I'd concentrate on grammar and build up their vocabulary with lots of examples in different contexts.
