About Ryan

Hi, I’m Ryan Carvalho, an Executive Function and Study Skills coach with more than 12 years of experience helping students build stronger focus, organization, planning, follow-through, and academic independence.

My background combines psychology, behavioral science, special education, and extensive work in high-performing Massachusetts school environments, including Boston Latin, Brookline, and Newton. I have worked with hundreds of students across a wide range of learning profiles, including students with ADHD, autism, executive-function challenges, procrastination, inconsistent motivation, and difficulty managing increasingly demanding academic workloads.

I founded Behavioral Bridge to provide the kind of structured academic coaching many capable students need but rarely receive in school. My approach is practical and highly individualized. I do not simply tell students to “try harder,” “be more organized,” or “manage their time better.” I teach concrete systems for planning, task initiation, prioritization, organization, studying, attention management, and follow-through.

A major part of my work is helping students understand the patterns behind their difficulties. We identify where the breakdown is occurring—whether it is starting work, estimating time, remembering assignments, managing distractions, breaking down large projects, preparing for tests, or maintaining consistency—and then build a system designed around that specific problem.

My coaching style is structured, direct, calm, and supportive. Students receive clear expectations and accountability while also learning how to solve problems independently rather than becoming dependent on constant reminders from adults.

Parents value the consistency, communication, and practical systems I bring. Students value having someone who can make overwhelming academic demands feel clear, manageable, and actionable.

My goal is larger than improving one assignment or one report card. I want students to develop the routines, judgment, self-awareness, and independence they need to manage school successfully—and eventually manage those demands without me.

My Executive Function and Study Skills lessons are designed to build the systems behind strong academic performance: organization, planning, time management, task initiation, focus, prioritization, studying, self-monitoring, and consistent follow-through.

We begin by identifying exactly where the student’s current system is breaking down. That may include missed assignments, procrastination, forgotten materials, difficulty starting work, poor time estimation, distraction, inconsistent studying, weak planning, or feeling overwhelmed by large assignments and long-term projects.

From there, I build a personalized structure around the student’s actual school demands.

Students may learn how to:

• Build and maintain a realistic weekly planning system
• Break large assignments and projects into manageable steps
• Prioritize work based on urgency, importance, and workload
• Start difficult or avoided tasks more consistently
• Estimate time more accurately and plan backward from deadlines
• Organize assignments, materials, and digital school platforms
• Reduce distractions and create stronger focus routines
• Develop effective note-taking, studying, and test-preparation systems
• Track incomplete work and prevent assignments from slipping through the cracks
• Build routines that work even when motivation is low
• Review what worked, identify what failed, and adjust the system independently

Sessions are active and practical. We work with real assignments, upcoming tests, projects, schedules, grades, and responsibilities whenever appropriate rather than discussing executive functioning only in the abstract.

I also use accountability strategically. The goal is not for a student to depend on a coach forever. Early on, I may provide more structure, prompting, and monitoring. As the student develops stronger habits and judgment, responsibility gradually shifts back to the student.

For students with ADHD, autism, or other learning differences, I adapt the structure and teaching method to the individual while maintaining high expectations. The objective is not to lower the demands of school—it is to build the systems that make those demands manageable.

Parents often see improvement not only in completed work, but also in predictability, communication, confidence, and independence. Students begin to understand what they need to do, when they need to do it, and how to recover when they fall behind.

The long-term goal is simple: less chaos, less avoidance, stronger follow-through, and a student who increasingly knows how to manage his or her own academic life.
