About Sharon
I believe that learning Spanish should be a vibrant, enjoyable process that builds practical skills and opens doors to new cultural experiences. My teaching philosophy centers on creating lessons that are immersive, communicative, and student-centered. From the outset, I encourage active use of the language—through speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks designed to reflect everyday interactions and student interests. I avoid rote memorization and instead present grammar and vocabulary in meaningful contexts, such as storytelling, debates, or project-based activities that foster critical thinking and creativity. I incorporate authentic materials like films, music, articles, and interviews from across the Spanish-speaking world to expose students to diverse accents and cultural practices, enriching their learning beyond language mechanics. Cultural understanding is integral to my teaching; I explore regional customs, holidays, and social values that shape how Spanish is spoken and experienced worldwide. A defining moment in my teaching was witnessing a student’s excitement as they navigated a market in a Spanish-speaking country using the skills developed in our lessons—a testament to the power of language to bridge cultures. I adapt my teaching methods to suit each learner’s pace and preferences, using multimedia, games, and technology to maintain engagement and reinforce concepts. My ultimate aim is to build students’ confidence and competence, empowering them to communicate fluently and appreciate the cultural richness that comes with learning Spanish.

In my Spanish teaching, I focus on building authentic fluency through context, culture, and collaboration. I believe that language acquisition is a dynamic, long-term process best fueled by engagement rather than memorization. My classroom is a space of exploration, where students are encouraged to make mistakes, try new expressions, and take ownership of their progress.
I use Spanish extensively in instruction, adapting my input to suit students’ levels and guiding them toward comprehension through visuals, repetition, and context clues. I teach grammar inductively—embedded in texts, dialogues, or media—so students learn how forms function before learning their technical names. My lessons are designed to connect to real life: students might practice formal commands by designing a public health campaign or study past tense through biographical narratives.
I bring culture to life through everything from street food videos in Bogotá to spoken word poetry from Madrid, giving students insight into both linguistic and social realities. I’ve seen the impact of this approach most clearly in an “Immersion Week” I created, where students ran a simulated travel experience entirely in Spanish—from ordering food to navigating airport mishaps. They surprised even themselves with how much they could do. I also work closely with students to tailor lessons to their goals, whether academic or personal. With a balance of structure and spontaneity, I aim to make Spanish both accessible and inspiring—a language students want to keep speaking long after class ends.
