About Julie

I am a professional flutist teaching all levels of musicians - from children to adults. I was the Flute Lecturer at Loyola University Chicago and on the music faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago from Jan. 2010 to Dec. 2022. I moved to Austin in 2020 during the pandemic. I was trained in music theory pedagogy during my doctorate at Northwestern, and have a long history of teaching music appreciation, as well as courses in classical music in popular culture (film and tv/radio), and Brazilian music and culture. I've been teaching for over 30 years and am honored to be an 8-time Fulbright Fellow, teaching on behalf of the U.S. State Department. Through Fulbright I have taught in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Serbia, Sweden, New Zealand and Norway. I delight in teaching a variety of students and learn as much from them as they do from me. I mainly teach in English but also speak Portuguese and can get by in Spanish.

About the lesson

I believe that the best teachers are those who inspire their students. I have had many in my career, and can only hope to serve my students in a similar way. I believe that having deeper knowledge about any topic can make the world a lot more interesting and can give the student incentive and curiosity about expanding his or her interest in any subject. I seek to develop good listeners, and open doors for my students. (The first lesson is charged at my usual rate - it's not free. I couldn't change this website's auto-fill. Auto-fill also added that I teach "3" students - which is incorrect info. I teach both private and group classes in my home studio and at various schools. Additionally I do not make house calls. I teach at various schools in Austin or if you would like to arrange it, I can come to your school. I am background checked to teach in any Texas school and have IDs to work in Austin ISD and Hays CISD).
