I’ve been Joe’s student for a year and a half now and couldn’t be happier. Joe’s style is relaxed with just the right amount of challenging, adapting really well to the student from kids to adults. As an adult learner, I really appreciate the wholistic approach, switching fluidly between technique, theory, musicality, and contextual music history. Joe is very knowledgeable about his craft so I always come away with a deep understanding of the pieces we play, specific areas to focus on to improve, and the ever growing set of skills to constantly be improving, and the continued inspiration to spend more and more time with my instrument in deeply fulfilling practice time.

Hi! I played in the Golden Chamber Orchestra and Joe was the conductor. When the season was cut short due to COVID, he offered lessons to make up the difference. He is knowledgable about music history and puts pieces into a broader context. He is great at breaking a piece into parts to work on similar themes or techniques. And he emphasizes making a good sound. He's a great player and a really nice guy too! I highly recommend Joe as a cello teacher!
