The very first thing that the children need to learn are the basics of everything. So, I'd start with explaining the basics and making them read their books line to line, loudly. This way, their way of reading & understanding would improve.
Then I'll approach them for their doubts and once every student has cleared his/her doubts, I'll ask them to make brief notes on the same.
If the students make their notes by themselves, they'll be able to understand and retain it for a longer time.
