About Carla
I have a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Creative Writing with a minor in Journalism, along with strong experience in teaching and editing. As a 5th Grade ELA and History teacher at Success Academy Charter School, I developed skills in organizing complex information, encouraging critical thinking, and using student data to support student growth. In my most recent role teaching both ELA and History, I further strengthened my storytelling skills and understanding of historical context, which help me create clear, engaging, and accurate content. I am professional, detail-oriented, and committed to producing work that builds trust, confidence, and credibility with students.

My approach as a tutor is structured, explicit, and student-centered, with a strong focus on building both skills and confidence. I teach by breaking reading and writing concepts into clear, manageable steps, using techniques such as modeling, guided practice, word work activities, and shared reading to help students understand sound patterns, spelling, fluency, and comprehension. A typical lesson includes a brief review, direct instruction on one targeted skill, hands-on practice, and supported reading to reinforce learning. What sets me apart is my ability to identify learning gaps quickly and adjust instruction to meet each student’s specific needs, ensuring lessons are focused and supportive rather than rushed. My tutoring is designed for elementary and middle school students, particularly those who are reading or writing below grade level and benefit from individualized, structured literacy support
