About Dominic
I am a concert pianist with an extensive musical background. I studied at the Royal College of Music for my Bachelors, Masters and Artist Diploma, where I achieved a First Class degree and Distinction respectively, and received the Tagore Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Life at the Royal College of Music (the RCM’s highest honour, bestowed to two students annually). I am currently pursuing my Doctoral of Musical Arts at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music in the USA. I perform internationally for recitals and competitions, and so can provide students with personal insight of performing at the highest level, and dealing with the pressures of performing. I have been teaching the piano for the last 9 years, helping past students achieve distinctions in ABRSM grades 1- 8 as well as distinctions in ABRSM Music Theory exams, and specifically on the Aural Test aspect of ABRSM exams. I teach all ages and abilities. I am DBS checked, and can provide the certificate if students are interested.

I'm a highly experienced piano teacher, having worked with students of all ages and abilities. Whether my students are aiming to become professional, or just playing for fun, I always make sure that I get the very best out of them, whilst making sure that lessons always remain enjoyable. All pupils work differently, and I'm always quick to adapt my approach to what works best for them. Here is my website: (concealed information) Though I’m trained as a classical pianist, I also work professionally as a jazz pianist and am happy to teach jazz piano, or in other popular styles if students would prefer. For students preparing graded exams, I help them structure a practice routine to ensure that they are fully prepared for the big day. For students preparing GCSE or A Level music, alongside helping them prepare for the performance, I offer advice for the academic side of things, such as the music history and composition sections of the course. For people starting from scratch, I make sure that we don't get too bogged down in technical terms early on and just get playing, whilst making sure that we adopt good habits from the very beginning. An important aspect of learning the piano is learning correct technique. When we play the piano, everything is connected holistically, with the arms, wrists, elbows and fingers all working in tandem. With the right technique and good habits, we avoid tension, which helps us in three key ways: 1) It helps us to avoid injury, something which musicians suffer as much as athletes. 2) It helps us develop a fluid technique where we can play whatever we want at the piano, without anything blocking us. 3) It helps us produce a singing sound, without the harshness associated with tension, and thus sound more musical.

Perfect! Dominic is an extremely talented pianist and an excellent teacher. He teaches my 7 year old son who is currently preparing for his ABRSM grade 7, and I have seen a great improvement in his playing since he has been learning with him. Dominic is a very kind and thoughtful person. He is positive and encouraging and makes the lessons enjoyable, whilst also ensuring the technique and quality of playing are always of a high standard. He has already covered a wide repertoire with my son and has had a clear direction for him moving forward, which has been very refreshing. My son loves learning with him and looks forward to his lessons, and Dominic engages with him in a really lovely way. Dominic’s passion for music and playing is clear and has furthered both my son’s and my own love of the piano, and my son was enthralled by Dominic’s recent recital. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.

I would like to highly recommend Dominic Doutney to you as a music teacher for your children. Dominic is a talented piano teacher who has got lots of international awards and is still very active in attending performance and competitions. We were very fortunate to get his contact from the Royal College of Music about two years ago for my daughter's piano lessons. My daughter was five years old and it was Covid pandemic at that time so the lessons began with online teaching for about one year, but Dominic is exceedingly patient and encouraging. His passion in music and success in music community inspire my daughter to try the best effort in learning piano. My daughter was selected to perform piano in the school music festival this summer term and her performance got good recommendations from the school and the council music representative. Although he is one of the best music teachers in the country, his prices are extremely reasonable.

I'm actually a professional opera singer and voice teacher and on countless occasions Dominic has coached me through my own repertoire and accompanied my voice students and made backing tracks for their singing exams. His work on this front has always been flawless, professional and tailored to the student's needs and actually some of my voice students have subsequently decided to take piano lessons with him.
I would particularly recommend taking lessons with Dominic because he is not only a knowledgeable and skilled teacher, but also a kind and insightful person. Music is not an easy industry and there can be many rejections and disappointments - Dominic has personally given me so much useful and insightful advice when I have dealt with this over the years and I think his piano students are lucky to benefit from the same wisdom.

Dominic is a fantastic teacher - he will encourage and gently correct so you can tackle the music you love or get the best results for grades He’s taught our daughter from grade 1 at primary and she’s now in doing her mock a levels.
