My teaching method focuses on active learning, where students engage directly with the material through discussion, writing exercises, and peer collaboration. I emphasize critical thinking and creativity, encouraging students to express their ideas while understanding the underlying principles of effective writing. Techniques I use include:
Socratic Questioning: Guiding students to explore ideas deeply by asking probing questions.
Workshopping: Allowing students to critique and improve each other's work in a constructive environment.
Writing Prompts: Providing creative prompts to spark imagination and develop writing skills.
Feedback Loops: Offering detailed, constructive feedback and encouraging self-reflection.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Introduction (5-10 minutes): Brief discussion on the day's objectives and a warm-up activity, such as a quick free-write or a discussion on a relevant topic.
Mini-Lesson (15-20 minutes): Focused teaching on a specific aspect of writing, such as thesis development, narrative structure, or stylistic devices.
Guided Practice (20-25 minutes): Students work on a writing exercise related to the mini-lesson, with my guidance and support as needed.
Peer Review/Workshop (20-25 minutes): Students share their work with peers for feedback, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Reflection and Homework Assignment (10 minutes): Recap of key points, student reflections, and assigning a task to reinforce learning, such as revising their work based on feedback.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What distinguishes me as a tutor is my ability to connect with students on a personal level, understanding their unique learning styles and needs. I blend creativity with academic rigor, making lessons both engaging and intellectually stimulating. My focus on student-driven learning ensures that students not only improve their writing skills but also gain confidence in their ability to articulate their thoughts.
Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for college students at various levels, from those who are just beginning to explore creative writing to those who are honing their craft. Whether students are pursuing English degrees or taking elective writing courses, my tutoring sessions are tailored to meet their specific academic and creative goals. I also work with students who may need extra support in developing their writing skills, ensuring that everyone can achieve their full potential.
