I met Clayton while we were both at Southwestern Seminary, and I got to see firsthand how sharp and thoughtful he is as academic. What stands out most is how he takes complex material and explains it in a way that actually makes sense, without making you feel overwhelmed or behind.

I’ve known Clayton since 2019 when we crossed paths in seminary. Clayton is a theologian. There could be many words to describe him. All would be fitting, but most appropriate is the former. He cares deeply about God and desires others to see the beauty that he sees. His background in Lewis has shaped his soul as someone who can narratively and imaginatively connect deep theological truths in an accessible way. In that way, Clayton is a pastor-theologian. He cares deeply for the souls of others.

As a friend, Clayton is my closest confidant. He is the person I turn to with any question. When I began the process of writing my first book, he was the first and only ask for a partial contribution. In deep issues of sin and temptation, he’s who I wrestle through things with. He’s again, deeply knowledgeable, but so friendly and accessible.

Some teachers can sit above their students; holding their knowledge, pedigrees, and themselves over their students. Clayton is one who sits with students. Again, there is not a smarter person in the realms of theology, philosophy, and apologetics than Clayton. But he does not come across as one who is full of himself. Simply because he isn’t. He takes his studies very seriously, but more seriously than that, he takes his walk with Jesus. So he teaches with patience, grace, understanding, love, with the hope of transformation of the soul. His invitation is much like Paul’s, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” Clayton is a pool of accessible knowledge that the youngest of “toddlers” to the most advanced “swimmers” can spend time in.

From weddings, late night movies in the seminary apartments, guys trip, and classes together, Clayton has deeply shaped my life. I’m forever grateful for our friendship and how he has discipled me. He is more than qualified for this role and I’m beyond proud and honored to write a recommendation on his behalf.
