About Michelle

Hi, there!

I like to call myself an accidental certified Special Education teacher. Growing up, I wasn't sure what I was going to do as far as careers go. However, my journey accidentally landed me in education. Sometimes, I still can believe it, but as I believe Bob Ross would say a 'happy little accident.'

I began working with kids when I was just a child myself at 19, teaching kids anywhere from the ages of 9 - 18. It was strange! All of a sudden, I was the adult, and I had to answer questions and lead the children, when I still felt like a child with questions myself. I went all in, and I taught kids culinary arts, art, volleyball, and tutored STEM projects. From there I went on to become a full-time math tutor for grades EC-12, gaining experience in both middle and high school levels of math. Then I accidentally became a middle school math Special Education teacher. I didn't even know what that was or how all students with special needs could be fully accommodated in and outside the classroom. It was an intense, insane, and incredibly rewarding time of my life.

Although, yet another switch was made. I became a middle school math general education teacher. Now I was looking over an entire grade level of students. SO many lives and futures were in my hands. I took their futures seriously, and I worked all hours of the work week and weekend to make sure I was not only doing my best, but giving my best for the kids. I was beginning to get the hang of it, see progress with the children, and I could feel the joy in the classroom. Then the unthinkable happened. COVID hit, and I didn't get to see my kids for another two years. They were almost unrecognizable if not for their smiles.

However, until I saw them again, I continued to teach but virtually. Virtual teaching was yet another beast to conquer, but I believe it was successful. What's always been the most important to me was building and maintaining relationships with students and families, and I still have the privilege of knowing my past students, even if those relationships were built in front of a screen or in person.

Two years later, I was offered another middle school math/reading Special Education teaching position, and I finally understood what I needed to do to fully serve all students. Every student learns in their own way and deserves the effort of a teacher's adaption to their specific style of learning despite being a student with special needs or not. However, to better serve all students, I became a certified special education teacher. My role first is to be a voice and aid to all students in need.

That is why I'm here. Helping students is not a job, it's a privilege.

Some of my teaching methods are simple. One of my favorite methods, no matter the grade level, is color coding. Whether you are in grade school or high school, you'll begin to notice that it will become more challenging. There's a lot going on, and color coding is such a simple method to help students follow along in each step. What goes where, where it came from, and what the next steps will be. I also love making blank graphic organizers, pictures of tools used to organize given data. This allows students to break down what information is given, and then what information is actually needed. Mnemonic devices are also great tools to use to help students remember strategies like PEMDAS.

Though I am a math special education teacher, I specialize in adapting to all students. I deep dive into lesson plans to figure out the 'knows' vs what a student should 'do' for each individual lesson. I then find the problems that will be easiest to introduce the method and solve it myself to understand where the most confusion and disconnect for a student might occur. This will allow me to properly scaffold and be ready to provide accurate notes, strategies, blank graphic organizers, and verbiage for students to understand as best as possible.

My lessons are generally for grades 5th - 11th. This generally includes Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Algebra II.

What sets me apart as a tutor is that though I genuinely love teaching math, my first passion is caring about my students. When they know or trust that I care about them, they begin to also care about themselves. That's what matters, and that's when learning actually occurs.
