  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

First, I developed an interest in my subject and in private tutoring since I was admitted to the University of Ibadan as an undergraduate in 2011 to study Communication and Language Arts (with English). Having learnt the basics of the English language as an undergraduate, I began teaching the language to both small and large groups of students and individuals whom wish to improve their spoken and written English.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students

Further, since English is a language of commerce and communication, it is now the Lingua Franca in that it is widely spoken by millions of people in the world, including Anglophone West African countries in a number of indigenous communities in which the locals speak a wide range of different languages. With regard to this, English plays a major role in uniting as well as promoting peace among the people. As a graduate of Communication and Language Arts (with English), I teach different topics in English including speaking, writing, reading and listening under which phonology, semantics, morphological and syntax, lexis and structure, and literature in English are subcategorised.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

There are very many teachers, academics and authors whom have inspired me as a student and teacher of English. Some of them are Emeritus Professor Noam Chomsky, Professor Wole Soyinka, Professor Ayobami Ojebode, Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, Professor Ayo Kehinde, Professor Nelson Fasina, Professor Adenike Akinjobi, Professor Oluwatoyin Jegede, Professor M.T. Lamidi, Professor Ademola Dasylva, Dr John Ibanga, Dr Demola Lewis, Dr Babatunde Ojebuyi, Dr Francis Amenaghawon, Dr Gbenga Elegbe, Dr Bisi Olawuyi, Dr Charles Akinsete, Dr Tolu Akinseye, among others.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In addition, there are certain qualities that a good tutor should have. These include: motivation, empathy, enthusiasm, patience, adaptability, humility and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

On the one hand, teaching English to a wide range of students, especially second language learners, could be challenging because many of them have there different native languages from which they may have to switch to using the English language. Of course, it is mostly difficult for many of them to cope with using English, especially in verbal communications, owing totally to linguistic interference and the fact that many English sounds (e.g., the short /ə/ and long /ɜː/ schwa sounds) are not available in the phonemes of the second language. (For instance, Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country with over 500 native languages, and these, by and large, affect second language learners in the country.) As a result, many learners or speakers misspell or mispronounce certain words (such as replacing /t/ with /θ/ in the final position of teeth /tiːθ/.
  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

On the other hand, at every academic level or in every facet life, there are always hurdles to cross. As a student at the University of Ibadan, I was faced with different difficulties ranging from financial constraints, coping with lecturers with different personalities to coping with challenging causes such as phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics, writing, reading, public relations, ethics of communication, public speaking, news writing and reporting, and the like. Nevertheless, in the long run, hard work and resilience paid off.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

Writing, speaking in public and, by extension, stage performance have always been my passion right from the onset. Teaching, however, is an element of these admirable skills and has helped me in a number of ways to be able to improve my communication skills. As a matter of fact, I have authored two books on the grammar of English: 'A Guide to the English Language (1): The Grammatical Units and the Concord; 'A Guide to the English Language (2): The Grammatical Accuracy'.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

Finally, my ability to communicate my ideas effectively using different teaching methods based on the personalities of my student, my ability to motivate my student(s) and myself, my ability to have empathy on my student(s) and to teach them with enthusiasm and patience, my adaptability and my humility make me a Superprof.
