My approach to teaching high school biology is rooted in making science approachable, engaging, and genuinely understandable for my students. Working primarily with 9th graders, I recognize that many are still building confidence in both science and math, so I focus on breaking down complex biological concepts into clear, manageable ideas. I emphasize understanding over memorization, often connecting topics to everyday life so students can see how biology exists beyond the classroom.
My teaching style blends structure with personality, using humor as a key tool to keep students engaged and at ease. I make lessons relatable by tying concepts to the experiences of the average American teenager—whether that’s comparing cellular processes to familiar routines or using real-world examples that feel relevant to their lives. This approach helps lower intimidation around challenging material and creates a classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and participating.
A typical lesson begins with a quick, informal review to activate prior knowledge, often using light humor or a relatable scenario to draw students in. I then introduce new material in a straightforward, digestible way, followed by guided practice where students and I work through examples together. As the lesson progresses, I gradually shift responsibility to the students, encouraging them to think critically and explain their reasoning.
