About Ken

Feeling nervous about speaking Japanese?
If you’re worried about making mistakes or feeling rushed, you’re not alone.
I specialise in calm, respectful, beginner-friendly lessons where you can speak at your own pace.

From the very first class, my goal is to help you feel comfortable, safe, and supported. Step by step, I’ll help you build real confidence in speaking Japanese naturally and clearly.

Hello, I’m Kentaro, a native Japanese tutor.
I work mainly with adult learners — especially beginners and returning learners who want gentle, well-structured lessons without pressure.

Before moving to Australia, I worked in the medical field in Japan. I supported many non-Japanese speakers in sensitive situations, which taught me how important clear explanations, patience, and empathy are. This background strongly influences my teaching style today. Many of my students tell me they feel relaxed and secure in my lessons, and that their confidence grows naturally, without feeling pushed or judged.

Creating a respectful learning environment is something I value deeply. If you’re learning Japanese for conversation, travel, or daily communication, I’d be happy to support you. Book a trial lesson and see if my calm, supportive approach feels right for you.

I especially enjoy helping learners who want a calm, respectful space to learn Japanese with confidence.

Learn Japanese Calmly and Confidently – Supportive Lessons for Adults.

My lessons are designed especially for adults who may feel nervous about speaking Japanese at first. I create a calm, supportive, and pressure-free environment where you can learn at your own pace and gain confidence step by step.

Many of my students start as complete beginners and are surprised by how quickly they begin to speak comfortably. I focus on clear explanations, practical examples, and plenty of relaxed conversation practice so Japanese feels natural and enjoyable.

I have experience teaching learners from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and many different cultural backgrounds, and I always adapt lessons to your learning style and goals. How each lesson is structured

You will first understand the language clearly, then practise using it with guidance and gentle correction.

This method helps you remember naturally and speak with confidence. What you will learn in my lessons • Everyday conversation for real-life situations
• Clear grammar explanations made simple
 • JLPT preparation (N5–N3) with focused support
 • Pronunciation and vocabulary for natural communication
 • Polite expressions and Japanese cultural etiquette
 • A personalised study plan that fits your pace • Optional homework for steady progress

Mistakes are always welcome — they are part of learning and improvement. Whether you are starting from zero, returning after a break, or preparing for the JLPT, I will guide you calmly and clearly.

If you would like to start learning Japanese in a relaxed and supportive way, I would be happy to help you. Trial lessons are always welcome.

  • 1) Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes, I grew up speaking Japanese in Japan. My inspiration to teach the language came from meeting people overseas who were eager to learn not only the language but also the culture behind it. Their enthusiasm made me realize how meaningful it can be to share my language with others.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, the writer Natsume Sōseki represents the spirit of Japanese language and culture. His works capture the subtlety of Japanese emotions, relationships, and identity. His famous phrase “I love you” translated as “The moon is beautiful tonight” reflects how Japanese language expresses feelings indirectly and gracefully.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite words is “お疲れさま (Otsukaresama)”. It’s often used at the end of the day to express respect and appreciation for someone’s effort. It reflects the Japanese spirit of harmony and empathy toward others.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Japanese is not only my mother tongue but also a way to connect deeply with people from different countries. Teaching Japanese allows me to build bridges between cultures and share values of respect, patience, and subtle communication.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Many students find kanji and the three writing systems challenging. But with a step-by-step approach, real conversation practice, and cultural context, learners can progress naturally. Consistency and enjoying the process are key to success.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I taught Japanese to a group of medical professionals, I noticed how quickly their motivation grew once they could use polite phrases with confidence. They told me that being able to greet patients in Japanese changed their daily work environment and built trust. This reminded me how language can truly connect people.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

When I moved to Australia, I started to see Japanese from a learner’s point of view. By interacting with people from various backgrounds, I discovered new ways to explain grammar, pronunciation, and cultural nuances clearly. Living abroad has strengthened my ability to teach effectively.
