About James

Hi, I’m James. I’m a teacher and writer from the UK, and I genuinely enjoy helping people become more confident using English.

I’m friendly, relaxed and curious, and I like lessons to feel natural and engaging rather than like another hour in a classroom. I’m interested in people, so I’m just as happy discussing films, travel, work, culture or everyday life as I am working through a particular language problem.

I’ve spent years working in education, but I’m also a writer and screenwriter, so I have a particular love of words, stories and good conversation. I’m always interested in hearing about people’s lives and experiences, and I think that makes teaching English a lot more interesting too.

Outside of teaching and writing, I’m a big film and television fan, I love travelling, and I’m usually happiest having a good conversation over a coffee.

About the lesson

I help people use English with greater confidence, fluency and precision — whether that means having better conversations, writing more effectively, preparing for work or study, or simply feeling more at ease in English.

I’m a UK-qualified primary teacher with experience in London schools, as well as a writer and screenwriter. That combination gives me a practical understanding of how people learn and a strong instinct for language, communication and storytelling. I bring both into my teaching.

My lessons are tailored to the individual. We might work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, build confidence through conversation, develop writing skills, or focus on a specific goal such as an interview, presentation or exam. I teach beginners through to advanced students, and I adapt the level and pace accordingly.

Most importantly, I want you to leave each lesson having actually used English — not just studied it. The aim is progress you can feel and language you can take straight into real life.

Outside teaching, I work professionally as a writer and screenwriter, so stories, films, television and books are naturally a big part of my world. I’m also endlessly curious about people and places, which tends to make for some pretty good conversations along the way.

My standard rate is £35 per hour for one-to-one lessons.

If you’d like to commit to regular lessons, I offer a block of 10 sessions for £300, bringing the cost down to £30 per lesson.

I also offer a free 30-minute introductory session, so we can meet, talk about your goals and see whether I’m the right teacher for you.

Lessons are tailored to your needs, whether you want to improve your conversational English, speak more naturally, develop your writing, prepare for work or study, or simply become more confident using English.
