I always start with the prompt! What are you supposed to be writing and why? Then we can look at the thesis. What are you arguing and how? If you already have a draft I like to go through each paragraph and discuss what the section is saying, how it connects to the thesis, and if it successfully argues your point. Then we look at the conclusion. Does it pull your essay together and what does it leave your reader? Beyond these points, I like to allow the student to guide the session. What questions do you have? What don't you understand? What do you need to practice? Let's discuss.
