About Maya
I'm Maya, a PhD candidate in Biomedical Science at UConn Health, where I build computer models of how bacteria grow, move, and form communities. I earned my B.S. in Biology from Emmanuel College in Boston, with minors in Data Analytics and Public Health. Before graduate school, I worked as a research assistant at Brigham and Women's Hospital, analyzing CT scans and patient data to study lung disease.
Teaching has been part of my journey throughout. I've served as an instructional assistant for molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry, and mentored younger STEM students one-on-one. I love the moment a tough concept finally clicks, and I remember what it felt like to struggle with these subjects myself. My goal is to help you build both understanding and confidence.

My goal is for you to truly understand the material, not just memorize it. I break complex topics into clear, manageable pieces, connect them to real-life examples, and use analogies and diagrams to make ideas stick. Before we move on, I'll ask you to explain concepts back to me so we both know you've got it. We start by checking in on what you're working on and where you feel stuck. Then we work through the concept together, practice with problems or exam-style questions, and finish with a quick recap and tips for studying.
