About Clarence Shao Zheng

I’ve been providing one-to-one grinds for the past four years, working with several students—some of whom were referred to me directly by my A-Levels teacher. Over time, I noticed that many of my students felt more comfortable with me than with a traditional teacher, largely due to our similar age. I believe being in the same age group helped break down barriers, making students more open to asking questions and engaging socially.

I’m naturally friendly and outgoing, and I’d like to think I create an environment where students not only feel supported academically, but also genuinely enjoy our sessions.

I believe in tailoring each session to the individual needs of the student. I don't deliver a standard, one-size-fits-all lesson unless I’ve had the chance to assess the student myself over a few sessions. At the beginning, I usually ask students what they would like to focus on—especially older students—since they often have a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses. From there, I build lessons around their input and gradually develop a clearer picture of their current level.

For students with partial weaknesses in specific topics, my approach depends on the subject and the student’s comfort level. Sometimes I begin by going through questions directly and teaching point-by-point as we go. Other times, I teach the topic first, then follow up with questions. I adapt as I go, depending on what seems to benefit the student most. Most of the time, these students are still actively learning in school, so any support—whether through teaching or practice—is generally helpful.

For students with broader weaknesses across many topics, I adjust based on their fundamental understanding:

- If they lack a solid foundation, I’ll begin by teaching a topic of their choice and then reinforce it with questions.

- If their fundamentals are relatively strong, I’ll go straight into problem-solving, teaching through questions.

I don’t believe in giving formal "exams" right away. Instead, I assess their progress gradually. Over time, I reduce the amount of help and hints I provide during our sessions to get a clearer sense of how much they’ve retained and where they still need support.
